Re: Annual 2020 Competition

Congrats to all, fantastic winning image Simon, well done indeed. Well done the judges picking through that lot. A superb entry list again this year. Rosalyn's Black Hairstreak I liked, Greenanrol's Essex Skip, though all three images were winners, Nigel Kiteley, Grizzled Skip. All too good. :) Chee...

Brilliant! Congratulations Mark Searle. What an image. I knew as soon as I saw it we were all sunk. Worthy winner. Well done. I'm over many moons with fourth mind :)

Re: July 2019

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone away from the east coast of Scotland , north east England is experiencing a very sharp increase in Painted Lady numbers. Reports incoming are of multiple hundreds almost everywhere. Coastal locations are seeing phenomenal numbers. I have even had reports of Painted La...

Re: February 2019

I have only really just kicked off up here in the Scottish Borders with a few Peacock and a single Comma yesterday on a patch of Snowdrop down by the Whiteadder river in Berwickshire. I expect that its possible that these Butterflies may start holding traditional territorial disputes if this weather...

Re: White-letter Hairstreak - Favourite Photo 2018

Last year was defined for me by the realisation that the newly discovered White-letter Hairstreak Scottish branch had more than likely been resident for many years. During winter 2017/18, Spring 2018 and Summer 2018 a number of new sites were discovered dotted across the Scottish Borders from Paxton...

Re: Northern Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2018

A quickfire season for Northern Brown Argus up here in South east Scotland during 2018 as most adults emerged in a short window from the first week in June after a slight delay on the coast due to easterlies. This year I saw the species in numbers throughout the entire length of the Berwickshire coa...

Re: Annual 2018 Competition

Many congratulations to Bill,Tony and Nigel. Well done also to the judges as I could not have picked a winner out of that lot. :) I am pleased as punch with fourth...I was as ever more hopeful until some of the big hitters started to submit entries. Im very lucky to be top ten I reckon.

Re: Argus Species Identification

Well then, thats a beauty isn't it. Not Northern Brown Argus by a long chalk though the thumbnail image would have fooled me. I agree with CallumMac that its likely ab. snelleni. I have seen a good few of these on various forums this year. As for NBA Scottish flight times. I don't agree with CallumM...

Re: Alternatives to Photoshop

PaintShop Pro for me. It used to be really cheap, it's not as much so now, yet essentially cheaper then Photoshop. I have never really had a copy of Photoshop...so I am not hankering after anything anymore technical than I currently possess. I use pretty much all that Mike pointed out...a mixture of...

Re: March 2018

Not an awful lot to report up here in the Scottish Borders, though I did see 1 Peacock in Berwick-upon Tweed Thursday past. Meanwhile I have been making do with some of the potential for this summer in the shape of White-letter Hairstreak Satyrium w-album ssp. scotica haha

Re: Jamie Burston

At risk of being seen as a rank amateur, can you give any tips on identifying elms in the winter/early spring? That, David, is the very line I would have written just 3, maybe 4 weeks ago. I did not have a clue. I have since been enlightened :) The absolute necessity required now to identify Elm in...

Wow, that is exciting. Our new place is only about 20 miles from there. Goalposts moved a bit further towards you Nick with several more finds at Harestanes, Ancrum. I would be checking Elm for the hell of it now...and I am with no luck so far. I have never taken so much interest in a single Tree s...

Re: Scottish White-letters latest.

Yes David, its hectic and mind boggling but ultimately fun to have absolutely no idea what's going on despite hours and hours of field work. The latest mystery is Brimstone which have suddenly appeared not once but thrice at great distance from each sighting and all reported by dedicated naturalists...

Scottish White-letters latest.

For those who don't know, we have had some very, very good news..nay...jaw dropping news, up here in the Scottish Borders with a few White-letter eggs being found on Elm on the Scottish side of the Tweed by Ken Haydock and Jill Mills a few weeks ago. The full story can be read either on the BC blog ...
