Unusual Painted Lady?

Spotted this individual on the buddleia today, it seemed to me that the markings are quite dark, is it just my eyes or ordinary variation or is it an aberration?

Went up to Arnside Knott today and saw my very first Grayling! I also saw a freshly emerged Scotch Argus, that place is going to be teeming with them soon . Other sightings included 3 Fritillarys, either DG or HB couldn't tell which as they just wouldn't stay still long enough for a photo! lol (whic...

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

I haven't seen any here yet, maybe I'm not looking hard enough? Perhaps my chances will be better later in the summer when the ofspring from these PLs emerges?

Re: Natural Phenomena

Astronomy is another of my favourite subjects and I always like watching for meteors. One evening when there is one of the annual meteor showers you should sit outside and take a look Pete, the geminids are one of my favourite and I saw 45 in a few hours in 2007.

Re: Encourage birds and loose the butterflies?

We feed birds in our garden and have done for several years and I have seen them searching for larvae and catching butterflies occasionally. However, in our garden at least, they never seem to have a detrimental affect on the number of butterflies and in good years and in the right weather condition...

Re: September 2008

It's been a suprisingly good day today: 3 Red Admirals, 2 Small Tortoiseshells, 4 Peacocks and the first Comma I've seen this year as well, ok nothing spectactular but compared to recent times around here, this is quite a lot.

The past few weeks have seen an improvement here: 3 Small Tortoiseshells, 2 Peacocks and a Red Admiral not much but I was begining to think I wouldn't see any, still no Painted Ladies however.

Re: Weather

Interestingly there was a ground frost in some places this morning. How low temperatures can butterflies survive during the summer months at night?

Thanks for that, that would be a good idea to make a list of mistakes to look out for, for beginners like me.
