Marbled Whites in South Wales
Afternoon all, I have had an enquiry from a friend who lives near Merthyr Tydfil about sites where the marbled white can be seen in the area. Ideally he wants to find somewhere within an hour and a half radius. Does anyone on here know of anywhere suitable where he might be able to see them within t...

Re: Wall Butterfly at Crickley Hill
I visited Leckhampton Hill late this afternoon and there was no sign of any wall browns or any chalkhill blues either, I doubt they will be present at Crickley Hill which is only a couple of miles from there. I saw a number of small skippers, ringlets, marbled whites and green veined whites and a fe...

Re: Wall Butterfly at Crickley Hill
Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common just a couple of miles away is also a good place to see Wall Browns, don't know if there are any around at the moment though

Re: Sites in the Forest of Dean
Many thanks for that information, it is greatly appreciated. I'll probably try Cannop Bridges Marsh near Cannop Ponds where pearl bordered fritillaries can be found and the area around Woorgreens lake as well

Sites in the Forest of Dean
I'm planning on visiting the Forest of Dean on Friday with a friend does anyone know any good sites there where we can see the Wood White?
Re: May 2011
I visited Strawberry Banks Nature Reserve which is managed by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust at Chalford near Stroud on Friday afternoon. I saw around six marsh fritillaries, 10-12 common blues, a couple of small coppers and a number of species of moth.
Re: May 2011
Just got back from Prestbury Hill Nature Reserve near Cheltenham, it was very windy up there but the visibility was good and there were frequent spells of sunshine. I saw two tatty duke of burgundys, one large skipper sheltering on a bush at the bottom of the valley, a small skippper, a few dingy sk...

Re: Sites for non-drivers
Cranham Common, Buckholt woods and Painswick Beacon are also easily accessible by public transport. You could take the no46 bus from Cheltenham promenade to Stroud/Nailsworth, the bus drops you off within easy walking distance of all these locations. If you visit Cheltenham, Leckhampton Hill is also...

Re: April 2011
I visited Prestbury Hill Nature Reserve again late this afternoon and early evening, there were plenty of Duke of Burgundys about particularly on the cowslips on the grassy slopes, Other species seen today were green hairstreak (on the hawthorn and in the trees which separate the two sites), oranget...

Re: Duke of Burgundy
I met two people from Butterfly Conservation late on Wednesday afternoon when visiting Prestbury Hill near Cheltenham, they were recording the numbers of Duke of Burgundys on the site. They marked each one they caught with a small blue spot on one wing, so it is highly likely that the ones you saw ha...

Re: April 2011
I visited Prestbury Hill Nature Reserve near Cheltenham this afternoon following the morning spent photographing bluebells in nearby Queens Wood. I saw a good number of Duke of Burgundys, two small blues the first i've seen this year, several dingy skippers, one small heath on a footpath on Cleeve C...

Re: Canon lens advice please
I have the Sigma 70-300mm DG Macro lens and use it for photographing both insects and birds, it is particularly good for photographing species that don't settle for long and let you get too close, like some dragonflies and species of butterfly like the Wall Brown. I've also had good results photogra...

Living in Gloucestershire I hope to see and photograph the following next year: wood whites, Duke of Burgundy, Chalkhill Blue, Adonis Blue, Green Hairstreak, White Letter Hairstreak, dingy skipper, grizzled skipper and if I venture into Wales the Marsh Fritillary

Re: DSLR or compact - how do you get good pictures?
I've always used a Canon Powershot when photographing butterflies with a compact, the one I mainly use is an A400 which is probably quite cheap if it is still on sale anywhere. It has always taken pictures of exceptional quality and is particularly good for close ups. Some of my butterfly photograph...
