Re: Found in SW19 - what is it?

Think it may be a female, cant zoom in to say for sure, but male Hawk moths usually have a distinct upturn to the end of the abdomen.

Re: Tics

Dont get me started on Clegs! I have a nasty reaction to them since I strapped a sleepy wasp to my thigh with a seat belt a few years back, it got me 4-5 times before I realised what was happening ! Leg swelled up like a football, now I come up in a nasty itchy oozing sore that lasts for ages and dr...

Re: Tics

Have to add, I visited G.P. for peace of mind and was given the all clear. Joking apart, I would suggest anyone being bitten by Ticks get checked out. Julian's friends story is a sobering tale (especially as I was victim in France) . This is the first time to my knowledge Ticks have bitten me, never...

Re: Tics

Came back from France with two of the little bu##ers attached to back of my leg, dropped off quite soon , dont think they like Hobgoblin ! Picked them up in Crecy Forest, think it was the French getting their own back for whitewash in August 1346 !!

Re: Butterfly or Moth goldie M

Hi Goldie, looks like one of the Carpet family of moths from what little pattern can be seen in the head on shots, cant be too sure and I stand to be corrected ! May be common carpet ? Good luck with the Swallowtails !!

Re: Goldie M Swallow Tail

Hi Goldie, we visited Norfolk last year to the same ends, visited all the recommended sites. Found that at Hickling Broad although good spot to see them they were buzzing over the reeds at too great a distance to photograph. We tried Strumpshaw Fen and found that they could be photographed round a f...

Re: January Peacock

Hi David, it was a large individual, larger than I would expect a male to be, there is a marked difference in size between the two that you come to recognise in flight when you get to my grumpy old fart stage of life having spent a long time observing butterflies. :D

January Peacock

Sighted a female peacock today whilst on my postal delivery in Hilcote,Derbys, its been a lovely sunny day and I almost took my coat off! It flew straight past me and over a bungalow. Not much about for it to feed on, only a few winter pansies. Hope it survives !

Re: Snow

Hi Vince, we have around a foot to 18 inches of the stuff in places here in Derbys, resorted to walking to work to avoid the Numpties getting stuck left right and centre! Hope you dont get snowed in! Roll on Spring Mate.

Re: Moth books

Hi Lee, I have it and find the illustrations very useful as they show the natural resting positions. Its also easy to use in the field when doing Moth Watches as it is spiral bound, better to hand round a group of people to illustrate a point.

Hi, forgive me if I am missing something obvious, why are the ratings for the Ann Comp not showing, or am I doing something wrong?
