Re: April 2011

Hi I was thinking of going to Ketton Quarry this Sunday, (17th). The weather looks fair. A bit of a drive from Wetherby, but I still need Grizzled Skipper - have you been back, or do you know if they are flying yet or indeed at any other sites in the area? Hi Lawts, I haven't been back to Ketton Qu...

Re: April 2011

...speaking of snakes... I went To Ketton Quarry in Rutland last Saturday (9th April) in search of those purported early-emerging East Midlands Green Hairstreaks (none), Grizzled Skippers (nope), Dingy Skippers (zip!)... but I still had a great time... and saw this male Adder scudding amongst the un...

Re: March 2011

Had a holly blue in my garden (south Notts.) on Sat. 26th March and again on Tues. 29th. That's the earliest I've seen one here. Butterfly Conservation is reporting Green Hairstreak sightings in Leicestershire on March 31st. Anyone know exactly where? (Brown's Hill quarry? Ketton quarry?). I'd love ...

Re: Suggestions please

Gruditch, please stop making me out to be the bad guy. I believe Peter Eeles, Felix, padfield, NickB and Zonda have expressed similar reservations to mine. Even if you have no respect for me then show some common courtesy to these esteemed others. I have not sidetracked this thread. I made the sugge...

Re: Suggestions please

Gruditch says: These are photography competitions, In natural history photography, and especially in macro photography, a messy, busy, cluttered background makes for an undesirable image. 'Undesirable image'? Surely an opinion rather than a fact? and I hardly think it fair that just because a couple...

Re: Suggestions please

Seeing as some folks are having a moan I'd like to join in (whilst remaining on topic). Do you think it might be possible to include a few categories where bokeh is not a prerequisite to getting a good rating? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a nice blurry background as much as the next person, but when ...

Re: 3-D cameras

I don't know much about 3D TVs and cameras that require glasses but I can point you in this (somewhat tangental) direction - http://www.nintendo.com/3ds/hardware The new handeld portable console from Nintendo - the 3Ds, released in Europe this March - features a 3D stereoscopic effect that does not ...

Re: Geographical Moan

In truth I only started this thread in an attempt to drive property prices in the area down, so I could afford to move to a snazzier house. :D But... I'm a little disappointed that nobody else wanted to confess that the places they live aren't equally as unblessed as Nottinghamshire... ...don't we h...

Re: Geographical Moan

Paul - that's a lovely website you've put together for Attenborough and I certainly didn't intend to malign the excellent work done around the county by the wardens and volunteers of the Wildlife Trust, Butterfly Conservation, etc. So I apologise if my attempt at flippant humour came across as a lit...

Re: Geographical Moan

Paul - Bunny Old Wood is one of my regular walks. I know the place is renowned for its White-letter Hairstreaks but I've never been lucky enough to see one (I must be looking up the wrong trees  ). Purple hairstreaks? I doubt it, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong. The same goes for Cotgrave ...

Geographical Moan

I reckon I couldn't have picked a worse place to live. South Nottinghamshire is my patch. West Bridgford to be specific. Home of the Trent Bridge Test cricket ground, the (former) National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, (former) Tory bigwig Ken Clarke, a Marks & Spencers, a few charity ...

As an addendum to the episodic Florida November 2010 trip report above, here are a few photos of 'captive' individuals taken at the Butterfly World 'attraction' in Coconut Creek. Featuring a couple of Florida natives/occasional visitors, but mainly the exotic tropical species so beloved of these est...

Re: Panasonic Lumix FZ38

Thanks very much for all the replies to my query about close-up lenses. After reading the information provided by Jack Harrison and that in the links suggested by NickB I believe the penny has finally dropped! :o :D Thanks also for the extremely generous offer of one-to-one tutoring from Sussex Kipp...

Re: Panasonic Lumix FZ38

What I received was the 'official' Panasonic stuff. (Insert picture of Jack shaking his fist here  ) Two separate items: the DMW-LA3 Lens Adapter and the DMW-LC55 Close-Up Lens. They're very easy to attach and unattach and there are no problems with fouling. I also managed to find the in-camer...

I've had a FZ38 for a few months and just about got the hang of it... then (somewhat to my surprise) I received the close-up lens and adapter tube thingy as a Christmas gift... ...HELP! Regarding both the ethics and the efficacy of Mr. White's north Notts. introductions... Followers of modern scientific theory will, no doubt, have realised that this discussion is entirely moot. Chaos Theory contends that a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil can start a tornado in Texas. In othe...

Here's the, slightly belated - Xmas shopping :| - last batch of photographs from my Florida trip. These are taken at Fairchild Tropical Gardens just south of Miami. We arrived mid-afternoon and since the place shut at 4:30 - and our flight was at eight - we forsook the guided tram ride around the gr...
