Re: Aston Rowant

I was also at Aston Rowant on Saturday (30th July). Early to mid afternoon... north side of the motorway. The slopes were teeming with silver-spotted skippers... plus loads of chalkhill blues, brown argus, small copper, meadow browns, whites, small heath, gatekeepers, marbled white... etc. etc. I'm ...

Re: celery

Sunday 24th July - in the garden watching the gatekeepers, bees and hoverflies on the tansy. Then a lunchtime walk along the Notts-Grantham canal from Gamston to Cotgrave and back. Nothing rarer than a peacock... but also large, small and green-veined whites, gatekeepers, ringlets, meadow browns, sm...

Re: celery

... apologies... rather tardy in posting... still in the process of selling my house... So I'll skip straight past the weekend (Friday) 15/16/17th July - where the weather was unrelenting here in Notts... and I endured a frustrating 3 separate trips to Cloud Wood, near Castle Donnington in North Lei...

Re: 2011 UK Butterflies Outstanding Contribution Award

As a relatively new member on the site I hope you won't think it inappropriate if I add my congratulations too. :) It was the kind comments I received from Guy (alongside Lee Hurrell, Charles Nicol, and others) when I began posting my diary that encouraged me to become more active on the site and de...

Re: Red mites on Marbled Whites

It ain't just marbled whites! These pictures were taken at the beginning of August last year at Fontmell Down. Almost all the common blues I saw had mites... and some - like the one in the picture - seemed to be more mite than butterfly... :? http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6140/5931835454_32415a23e7...

Re: celery

I've been occupied, to a large degee, by other matters over the past few days - like trying to sell my house - but I did manage a couple of walks around my local patch over the weekend. On Saturday to the waterless part of the Grantham Canal near the village of Cropwell Bishop - which always has goo...

Re: nfreem

after getting very useful directions from UKB member celery on his diary, many thanks for that. Actually I think it was me, wasn't it? :-) Glad you had a successful trip. Lovely photos. I don't might taking the credit for things I didn't do! (as long as they turn out all right) :D That's a very use...

Re: celery

Mike, I'd be very pleased if this proved to be a high brown... but sadly I don't think it is. My fingers are crossed that an expert will tell me I'm wrong. :) I have about another dozen shots of this individual if it would help to positively ID - unfortunately none of them show an underside. On the ...

Addendum to my recent Sheringham Park segment, I forgot to mention... first painted lady of the year by the 'stone' gazebo (that extra, unnecessary, 5-mile 'Rambler's Route' wasn't a compete waste of time then...). July 2nd. AM. Pensthorpe Nature Reserve. Another confession. I ain't much of a birder...

Re: celery

Thanks for the comments guys :) Anyhoo... leaving aside my undoubted misanthropy... I spent the next couple of days in Norfolk. It wasn't all butterflying... I squeezed a couple of site vists in between some viewings of gardens, strolls along the Prom and copious consumption of fish 'n chips and 99s...

Re: celery

I had a couple of days free last week so I went on a few trips to a some new places for me, plus a couple of old favourites. 27th June - Lathkill Dale , Derbys. A slightly disappointing 10 mile walk on a warm and humid day in the Peak District. 10 species, but each in low numbers -a single Dark Gree...

Re: Where have all the butterflies gone?

Piers enquired Are the dark green frits out in the Derbyshire Dales yet? I saw a single dark green fritillary at Lathkill Dale, near Bakewell, last Monday (27th June). It didn't stop to have its picture taken. I did a 10 mile circular walk around the meadows, villages and dale and saw the usual sus...

Oh,... okay. Serves me right for referencing stuff from just one book (in this case David Tomlinson & Rob Still's 'Britain's Butterflies') It does seem to have different markings from the ones we get here in Notts - reduced spots under the forewing eyespot and more pronounced hindwing eye...

Re: celery

Made the trip up to Arnside on Sunday (26th June). The steep slopes from the car park had plenty of small heath and grayling and the odd dark green fritillary. The meadows at the summit of the knoll held many more dark green fritillary along with northern brown argus, speckled wood, meadow brown, la...
