Re: celery
Hi folks, These images are of Florida butterflies taken on occasional trips between 2010 and 2014. These were winter vacations - usually taken late November - after the summer rainy season with it's accompanying threat of hurricanes and extremely high humidity has passed. Luckily, in central and sou...

Re: Large Heath - Favourite Photo of 2014
...no takers? Well here's one then. I always find this species to be particularly skittish... lots of photos where the critter is disappearing out of frame. Quite a dull day, and this one was in deep shade - not a good recipe for my FZ200, so focus not as crisp as I'd've liked.

Re: Large Skipper - Favourite Photo 2014
A nice couple of females from Crowle Moor in Lincolnshire, taken at the end of June. I went mainly to see the tail-end of the Large Heath flight season and found the site absolutely teeming with Large Skippers, with three or four often seen bustling together on a single flower. Re: Common Blue - Favourite Photo of 2014
Seemed to be a good year for this species in the East Midlands - with a large colony still very active into September on the Grantham Canal at Muston. Both these shots are taken in my own garden - where I'm pleased to say they have become very regular visitors in the last couple of years :) P1380939...

Re: Comma - Favourite Photo of 2014
I always feel a slight tinge of disappointment when that large orange butterfly you spot in the woodland turns out to be just a Comma rather than one of the summer fritillaries... but I shouldn't really - they are such beautiful butterflies.

A male and a female taken a couple of weeks apart at Barnack Hills & Holes. A lovely and reliable site from amongst their most northerly outposts... but often very windy when I visit.

Re: Questions about LUMIX FZ200
Sorry Neil, I'll re-phrase that... "I don't think I'm ever going to take the kind of shots that get included in the UKB calendar with this (or any other) camera"
And further apologies for another double-post (our messages crossed)

Sorry for the double post - I didn't want to lose the data I'd already uploaded. I should add that these images are reduced in quality in order to fit the maximum upload size on the site. cheers. Re: Questions about LUMIX FZ200
Sylvie asked for some examples of shots taken with the Fz200. So here goes. She stated she takes pictures of dragonflies and lizards too so those are included as well as the butterflies and bugs. All images have minimal correction - a little cropping and contrast adjustment in PhotoShop Elements 11 ...

Re: Grayling - Favourite Photo of 2011
Just as many others have reported in this thread, I too have had difficulities in tracking down grayling. I finally caught up with them this year at Arnside Knott on the 26th of June. Where there was a good-sized colony on the steep scree slope just out of the car park. An hour observing and photogr...

Re: Green Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2011
Nothing much to shout about from me in this category - despite the green hairstreak being one of my favourite butterflies. Must try harder next year.
This one from Bison Hill on April 25th from the same excursion as Duke of Burgundy.

Re: Subspecies of Speckled Wood in Europe
Thanks Guy
I have another picture of a different individual taken at the same time which looks a lot like your 'intermediate' photo shown above. Trouble is it's a terrible picture which is completely out of focus. I'll see what I can do to 'correct' it and maybe post it here later. Thanks again.

Re: Subspecies of Speckled Wood in Europe
Here's a picture of a speckled wood I took in Madeira back in 2007. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6007/5978283750_0b781bae49.jpg Now, I'd always assumed it was just the southern form of speckled wood - until I read about the Madeiran Speckled Wood Pararge xiphia in 'Butterflies of Britain and Europ...

Re: Duke of Burgundy - Favourite Photo of 2011
A couple of Dukes from what was my favourite butterfly trip of the year - Bison Hill, Whipsnade on the 25th of April. Not just Dukes but also grizzlies, dingys and green hairstreaks in profusion on a windy but largely cloudless Spring day. I've posted the first before... but I just like the way the ...

Re: Gatekeeper - Favourite Photo of 2011
I have a fondness for gatekeepers - largely because unlike a lot of the less common species I don't have to travel far to see them. These are from my own garden on what seemed like the only day in July we had any decent weather. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6133/5984350558_393c29bd25.jpg http://fa...

Re: October 2011 sightings
I watched two red admirals having a aerial dogfight for twenty minutes in the setting sun - in the bizarre environs of Pureland , an oddly cluttered and quite tacky Japanese-style meditation garden in the Nottinghamshire village of North Clifton on Sunday. When the 'victor' finally settled I snuck u...
