Brimstones at Arnside

I haven't seen any there this summer either in 3 July visits. Have seen them there in previous years though. Maybe they are late coming out this year at the site?

Butterflies around Leeds

I visited Hetchell Woods briefly on the 18th and saw 1 Marbled White female also. I was looking for WL Hairstreak and found plenty of elm around the parking spot and 1 around the grassland area. There are a couple of spots where you can stand on the crags and look down on oaks. Havent seen any hairs...

Plenty of nice fresh Grayling near the blast furnace today. This one was hiding on a nice bit of slag.

Meanwood Park

Hi Chris, I live in Roundhay but had no idea I could see this species on my doorstep, (which would be a new one for me) Can you tell me if there is a particular bit of the park I should look in?

Cheers

Mountain Ringlet - Ben Lawers

Mountain Ringlets are out now at Ben Lawers. I saw several today which were apparently the first this year at the site (according to visitor centre staff). They were from just inside the Northern end of the enclosure and for a few hundred metres uphill in a NE direction. HTH http://upload9.postimage...

Painted Ladies - Big Influx?

Hi, has there been a large arrival in the last few days? I ask because I have just returned from Lewis (Outer Hebrides), not an area known for butterflies and about the last place you would expect Painted Ladies to reach, and saw tons of them. Along the dune systems at Barvas (NW of the island) I es...

Small Blue - Yorkshire

Hi Chris, sounds like your local could be in Barnsley or Rotherham, dont find that sort of talk much in cosmopolitan Leeds! Anyway, as far as I know there aren't any Small Blues left in Yorkshire. There are alleged sightings sometimes but no proof. Check out http://www.yorkshirebutterflies.org.uk/fi...

Painted Ladies

Saw my first Yesterday on Lewis (Outer Hebrides). I wasn't there previously so can't comment on when they arrived but they were there in large numbers all over the Northern part of the island. Only other species seen was Green-viened White (abundant).

Cheers

Chequered Skippers - still around

Several today at Glasdrum Wood, at the little clearing at the top (Glasdrum tan spot). All looked quite fresh. Suspect the early first date was a bit of a freak occurence.
Small PBFs there as well.

Cheers
John
