Spain
My son has just returned from a walking holiday in the Pyrenees. He snapped a few butterflies and a couple of moths because he knows I'm interested. Could somebody take a look and name them? He has named one of the moths so a confirmation of that (or otherwise) would be appreciated Cheers Dave http:...

I believe that Tiff (tagged image file format) is non lossy ie it does not loose image quality but of course it does not compress the file, so they are large. The jpeg format (joint photographic experts group, or something like that) is lossy. This means you loose detail with jpeg, and the more you ...

Hi Nigel First the disclaimer, I'm not an expert but my guess is its a Southern Hawker. They have a broad antehumeral stripe (see pic) where a Migrant Hawker which looks very similar has a much smaller one. There is a chance that it could be a Common Hawker but once again the stripe does not look qu...

If you look at the pictures entered in the monthly comp, most people want to show as much detail as possible hence they get in as close as possible (me included). However if you look at gwenhwyfas picture in the September comp you can see that putting in some background puts the butterfly in context...

Hi Pete The images I post on this site are low res, usually 1000px on the longest side so that they are about the right size for viewing on most monitors. Will you want a high res versions? This is because if they are used in a magazine for example 1000px is probably not suitable for anything larger...

JKT thanks for pointing me in the right direction. My wife saw it land and said she thought that there was a flash of red on the underwing. It was about 12 ft. up a post so I was not able to disturb it (gently) to see for myself. We waited around for about 15 mins but it had more patience than me an...

It all depends on what you want to take snaps of. A stationary butterfly is fairly easy to photograph using manual focus, but to take a picture of a moving insect or bird gets a lot more difficult without autofocus. A good autofocus will track and adjust the focus as it moves. http://upload2.postima...

I have been out to look for second broods of common and small blues this year and have found in the small number of places I have visited there are very limited numbers. In fact I could not find any small blues at all at a place where there were lots earlier in the year. I have only found small numb...

Adonis blue
I went to Denbies Hillside last Monday in the hope of seeing an Adonis Blue. It was a hazy day about 18 degrees C. and there was very little to see (meadow browns, small heaths, one skipper and two large whites) were about it. The only blues were a couple of very worn females which I think were comm...
