No image received more than 11 votes, yet there were 21 entries. :?

You'd hope that at least those people who'd submitted an entry would take the trouble to vote, wouldn't you?

Country Tracks 23/10/11: Horse-Chestnut Leaf-miner

Yesterday's Country Tracks came from Surrey, and included an item from the plant pathology lab at RHS Wisley. After a discussion of fungal disease in Box, Ellie Harrison (fans please note) was taken to the entomology department, where she was told about the 2002 discovery in the UK of the Horse-Ches...

Re: Goldie M

Is it a particular kind of Ivy Pawpawsauras :?: I don't think so. It could possibly be a cultivated variety which has escaped from a nearby garden, but it's more likely to be the plain old wild Hedera helix . At least it looks as though it's still in full flower; most of the Ivy bushes I'm aware of...

Re: Goldie M

I took a sample of the plant and i've got it in a bottle with some water in , I'll take it to my local garden centre and find out what it's called, unless anybody knows what it is. It's Ivy. Its flowers are a major source of nectar at this time of year, hence its popularity with Red Admirals, Comma...

If they were to pick another female presenter I don't see why they shouldn't go for someone older rather than younger. I'd vote for Clarissa Dickson Wright (the remainder of the two fat ladies). She loves her countryside and the animals in it and would add a whole new slant to the programme. ...

I am so glad that at last the misnamed "Humble" has gone, Micheala is a great replacement. Don't get too excited - Humble's absence may only be temporary, while she's filming for a forthcoming series. Once that's done, she may well be available for next year's Springwatch. And don't forge...

... they have the Canon 18-55mm IS for £797.99 and thats way too much for that lens IMO, especially when you get it as a kit with some of the Canon DSLRs like 500D/550D/600D I strongly suspect that the Argos website is in error here. The £797.99 lens is described by Argos as a 'Canon EF-S18-55mm F/...

Blimey, you don't hang about, do you? :)
I saw my first 'Reported Attack' warning this morning. As it seemed persistent, I was about to report it to you. No need now.

A very nice set of shots, Lee - I'm jealous of the Brown Hairstreaks especially.

I've not yet made it to Aston Rowant. I keep intending to stop off there on the way home (or at Yoesden Bank for Adonis), but there's never enough time left.

Re: Whitecross Green Wood?

Thanks, Michael and Lee, for your replies. I can only guess that the peak of the Brown Hairstreaks for many of the Oxfordshire / Southern counties has gone, or has been disrupted by the strange weather patterns. Do we know whether numbers have already peaked yet, and whether this year's BH season ha...

Re: Whitecross Green Wood?

Michael, Yes, I did return to WGW today, and I made sure to arrive earlier than before to allow the BHs more opportunity to show themselves. The outcome was hardly much better though. I saw two BHs in total: one was a fresh-looking female (which perched almost out of view for under 30 seconds, and c...

Re: Whitecross Green Wood?

Hi, Michael Thanks for that - those figures have boosted my confidence somewhat, though I don't really understand why I've been so unlucky on all my visits so far. In fact, last year I met someone there who had connections with BBOWT, and even he couldn't understand why the BHs weren't showing, so i...

Re: Whitecross Green Wood?

On Friday I visited Whitecross Green Wood, on the hunt for Brown Hairstreaks. Despite what I thought were favourable weather conditions I found none, and of the five other BH hunters whom I met on site, four had been no more successful. The one person who'd seen a BH was still photographing it, but ...

On August 9th I saw a single specimen near the top of Telegraph Hill, Herts (TL117289). but that may be too far west for you. In eastern Herts, Therfield Heath (TL335400) is usually a good site for them, but I've not been there for a while so no guarantees. It's getting quite late for Marbled Whites...

Re: White Admiral feeding on a wasp

Has anyone else seen a White Admiral or any other species taking fluids from a presumably rotting insect? I have, but that's only because I was at Broxbourne Wood on July 1st looking for Purple Emperors, and your correspondent pointed out the above to me. :) Since then, I've been patiently waiting ...

Another open-winged Purple Hairstreak (yawn)

A few members recently have posted excellent images of Purple Hairstreaks showing off their iridescence. Please allow me to offer one of my own. I spotted this female on the footpath at Broxbourne Wood on 30th June (just in time for last month's photo competition :)) while I was searching for Purple...
