Re: Padfield

The big freeze has arrived. I'm quietly confident there won't be any butterflies around here for a bit: http://www.guypadfield.com/images2012/weather1stfeb2012.JPG (info from http://www.snow-forecast.com/ ) Down to -25°C on Friday night? Eek! Fingers crossed for Aurelian. At what temperature will h...

Re: Susie

Susie, Pardon my diary intrusion, but I thought you might be interested in this morning's Nature on Radio 4. It was entitled The Ghost Roost , and told the story of sound recordist Chris Watson (of Springwatch fame) doing his thing in Brighton's West Pier ten years ago, before it was burnt down. The...

Re: HS2

That said, was there not some success when the M40 was built, with the road diverted around the sensitive areas and the creation of the M40 Compensation Area? Did this not prove very successful in terms of colonisation by Black and Brown Hairstreaks having been set out with them in mind? (As an asi...

Re: Topical Quizes...?

I gave up when someone posted a link to the Amateur Entomologists' Society 2012 Christmas Quiz... http://www.amentsoc.org/about/news/0169/ ... this one has 100 very difficult questions..... :) Graham Wenman, the setter of the above quiz, has asked me to post the following, which was omitted from th...

Re: Joining a Camera Club

I don't often pass judgement on others' photos, as doing so seems to imply a degree of expertise on my part which I don't possess. However, since you've specifically invited comments for this image, I'll force myself. :) As far as the subject is concerned it's posing quite nicely, though its right f...

Re: Topical Quizes...?

... any of the letters in the word 'butterfly'? I think you may have cracked it, Guy. :D 'Map' shares the same property, but that doesn't really qualify as British. This question reminded me of the old trivia chestnut about the unique property of 'St Johns Wood' tube station. It was certainly true ...

Re: Must dos for 2012

Only a couple of weeks and the days will be starting to draw out again and we can look forward to Spring :D The first winter milestone has just passed; December 13th was the date of the earliest sunset. So although the days are still shortening, the sun is now starting to set later. It's not much o...

Purple Hairstreak name-change?

While browsing The State of the UK's Butterflies 2011 , I was surprised to see the Purple Hairstreak's scientific name given as Favonius quercus . Indeed, the BC site in general seems to use this name, rather than Neozephyrus quercus , which I'm now used to. Correctly or not, I tend to regard The NB...

I've posted this one before but I think it belongs in this thread, as one of the most unfriendly collections of signs on a public Right of Way in Britain! These look very like some signs I saw about thee months ago, while searching for Brown Hairstreaks. I'd spent most of the day at Whitecross Gree...

Wot, no Brimstone?

When viewing the names of the 'Species-Specific Forums' from the 'Board index', I don't see an entry named 'Brimstone'. However, if I select that forum, 'Brimstone' appears in its rightful place amongst the other subforums, and I can access it as normal. Is it just me, or do others see this behaviou...

Similarly, it would be good if the winners' photos were included in the post announcing the results so we don't have to find the gallery, the scroll through trying to find the ones marked as Winner, Second and Third. Just to add my 2p worth: could the default 'Sort by' criterion of gallery images b...
