Re: One show 29 March 2011

I know I haven't seen all episodes, but I can only remember a very brief Lep inclusion when Bill Oddie pointed out some moffs that had been attracted to the lights overnight. I remember Simon King presenting an item about Adonis Blues, possibly last year. Though it made a welcome change from the st...

Definately!

The value of Twitter for conveying anything more than soundbites is quite low. Only two of the preceding posts in this thread would be acceptable as tweets.

Re: February 2011

Is it normal for Speedwell to be flowering in February? I'm no expert, so I've consulted Roger Phillips' 'Wild Flowers of Britain'. It gives the flowering period of Persian Speedwell ( Veronica persica ) to be Jan-Dec and that of Field Speedwell ( Veronica agrestis ) to be Feb-Oct. Many of the othe...

Looks like one of the Speedwells, which can be tricky to distinguish at the best of times.

Re: Canon lens advice please

Are you perhaps talking about the non-IS version of this lens? Hi Paul. No, im definitely talking about the IS version as this is the one i have. Im pretty sure the review site agrees with most of the points i raised. Of course, it also focuses on the pros too which, as i said before, are an improv...

Re: Canon lens advice please

The kit lens really is rubbish, believe me. ... I looked into the matter further afterwards and it was then that i realised every review site on the internet said the same thing: the 18-55mm is not worth having. ... What lens do you use for butterflies? Hi Gill, Are you perhaps talking about the no...

Best place for it. :D
I recently bought a 550D; guess which kit lens came with it.

Not that I was planning to use it for butterflies, but even so, seeing it dismissed so easily is quite disappointing. :(

As far as I can tell, there are two sites on the net to sign petitions to Save Our Forests. http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/en/campaigning/save-ancient-forests/Pages/fc-disposals-act-now.aspx?WT.mc_id=fc http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/save-our-forests#petition Make that three: http://saveenglan...

Re: Forest sell-off

There was a quite informative debate/phone-in regarding the forest sell-off on Tuesday's 'You and Yours' programme on Radio 4.

Here's a link to the programme's home page, from which you can listen to the programme yourself:

Sorry - I didn't mean to steal anyone's thunder. :(

You could always break the news on the other thread. I expect that plenty of people who are following that thread may not read this one.

Re: Springwatch Christmas Special

Also interesting to learn that there's going to be some kind of public consultation regarding the process by which the forthcoming selling-off of state-owned forest is to take place.

Did we know that already?

Re: BC Conference

I almost talked myself into going to this year's BC conference, but it sounds like I didn't miss much. The last BC meeting I attended was an AGM in a dismal building somewhere in central London, sometime in the early 80s, when BC was known as BBCS. It was a quite drawn-out affair, which I found dry ...

Re: Plans for next year?

29th April 2011 could be an extremely good day to carry out some research on the under-recorded Green Hairstreak which can be found over much of Britain. My thoughts exactly. The Green Hairstreak is one of the first species I hope to find next year. I've never seen one, though neither have I specif...

Matthew Oates on TV tonight (25/10/10).

Since nobody else seems to have mentioned it, I thought I'd chip in. Matthew Oates made a brief appearance this evening on ITV1's 'Wild Britain with Ray Mears', watching butterflies in a Somerset hay meadow. The programme is available online here: http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=183217 an...
