Wall Brown larva.

On March 28th I was searching for Wall Brown larva when I found one that was lacking the white line along the side. It was also a much brighter green than the usual Wall Brown larva. 2 days later I found it again, but this time it had started to pupate. This of course explains why it was looking dif...

Re: January 2019

After many days with no sign of any sun, I was working through some photos on the computer late morning when I noticed the sun had come out for a while. I quickly got some gear together and headed up to High and Over to look for Wall Brown larva as well as the small chance of a Red Admiral. Before I...

Re: September 2018

On the 6th September I was on my 2nd home, (High and Over)!! The idea was to check out the 3rd brood of Wall Brown, which at that point hadn't quite materialised, with only a worn 2nd brood just hanging on. After bumping into James (B. Rex), I spotted a Clouded Yellow that was fluttering around look...

Re: September 2018

The other day I found a fully grown Red Admiral larva climbing up the door of my garage. On opening the door it fell off so I placed it in the foliage in the garden. Later I found it having a half hearted attempt at building a larval web. The next day it had given up on the web and had started to pu...

Re: August 2018

Yesterday I managed a quick survey of Wall Brown at the back of Seaford. Already they are past peak but a count of 85 was still achieved on the 4 mile circuit. Today I was observing some egg laying and watching a female enter a rabbit scrape it was clear she was looking to lay. After she had left I ...

Re: May 2018

Hi Bugboy.

I didn't see any egg laying although with the abdomen always poking around I assumed this was the most likely reason. However, if you are right it is such a big lunch for it that I'm sure there will be a few left alone!!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on these tiny critters!!!

Re: May 2018

The Peacock laying a nice bunch of eggs, already posted by B'Rex, but again here just to illustrate a point that nothing in nature is easy. The eggs this morning I checked on and found a nasty little creature laying its own eggs into the Peacock eggs. BOB_2735 (1280x759).jpg BOB_2766 (1280x851).jpg ...

Re: April 2018

Thanks to David for his comment about my find!! Well, yesterday I checked to see if there was any change in its development. It still looked the same, but I was delighted to find another in the same stage about 6 feet away from the one found on Friday. Today, I trudged my way back up to the site hop...

Re: April 2018

Following my best Spring searching for Wall Brown larva, with twice hitting 40 found in a session and probably 60-70 individuals found in total I was confident of finding pupa. I started looking last week when the larva started to become harder to find. Even a nighttime search didn't produce much wi...

Re: April 2018

After seeing around 25-30 butterflies yesterday, with 4 species. Most were Peacock, with 2 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Comma and several Brimstone. The Wall Brown larva have suddenly become harder to find. I guess that several have decided its safer now to feed at night, and some may have gone to pupate....

Re: March 2018

Hi Peter. The 1st 3rd brood was seen at the very end of August on the 31st, with a few flying with the last 2nd brood stragglers. The 3rd brood Wall I see more often than the other broods egg laying with several seen doing this on the 17th September for example, I would guess because they know that ...

Re: March 2018

Oh blimey. Yes, thanks for that Pete. I just had a quick check at another larva I found a couple of weeks back that I thought was a Specklie. That one is as it has some hairs. Many thanks for pointing that out, and yes, I am pleased as this is the 1st Small Heath larva I've come across. We learn som...

Re: March 2018

Well, I can't beat that!!!! However, As soon as I arrived at High and Over today I disturbed a butterfly that flew off quickly down the hill. Fortunately I watched it in the binoculars and saw the area it landed in. On approaching it the butterfly took off and flew back up the hill!! Once again I ha...

Re: March 2018

Plenty of activity with good numbers of Wall Brown larva. The attached was from this morning. I guess it had been feeding on the blade of grass until the rain came, but he decided to sit it out and get a little wet!!
