Re: North West Wales in June
Hi Paul, Other than South Stack mentioned by Mark, I have also seen SPBF at Newborough Forest, Anglesley (Grid Ref SH404638 / SH4043063896) and also at the bottom of Snowdon's Watkin Path (Grid Ref SH622515 / SH6225751543.If you find yourself on Anglesey a favoured spot of mine for Wall is Porth Tre...

Small Copper Aberration?
Hello everyone, I saw my first Small Coppers of the year this morning, with what I thought may be an aberration due to finer markings on the top wing (top photo), compared with the bolder markings on the other I saw (bottom picture). I would be grateful for any views on this. Bobbits Lane 12.5 (1).J...

White Caterpillar ID please
Hi, I have some flowering Garlic Mustard in my garden at present (first time it has flowered this late in the year). It is currently home not only to a Large White larvae (4th Instar) but also either a 4th Instar Small or Green Veined White (I cannot decide which one). I would welcome confirmation i...

Re: Kev Ling
A few more Small Blues, this time in our local Ipswich Park in early June. For a change they seemed quite photogenic and I was luck enough to find my first pair in copulation as well as my first ovum (there were quite a large number on a single Kidney Vetch plant). Hi Guy,
Nice catching up with your diary. I love the head on view of the Glanville Fritillary and that Alpine Heath is a stunner. Minnie did well to observe the Green Hairstreak so close. No chance of that with my Millie, she just flushes butterflies out for me.
Kind Regards
Kev

David, Great photos of the High Brown Fritillary, especially the one with the white markings. Haven't seen that before. Loving those Large Blue too. Still to see my first ones in the UK. Maybe 2024.

Glad you had a nice trip to Corfu Wurzel. As an Orange Tip fan, I guess I better join the queue with That lemony underside is superb.
I do like Cleopatra's too, with the orange top wing, a stunning butterfly.
Kind Regards

Magog Down - 4th June 2023 I paid a visit to Cambridge and the stunning Magog Down. Rolling hills of wildflower and the home of Small Blue. I had not encountered Small Blue in any great number before and the previous weekend had seen a count of 100. During my visit I saw 50 and had a personal audien...

21st May 2023 - Devils Dyke, Cambs A little late with my diary entries due to other commitments. On 21st May, my first field trip was to Devils Dyke, opposite the July course in Newmarket. Hi everyone, The traditional start to the year for me is my beloved Orange Tips. After almost 10 months of patience, our garden pupa finally produced a lovely female. This was the first time I had ever witnessed the rare sight of an Orange Tip emerge and it was a such a treat. BB6B5D99-7980-4409-92B1...

Dear UKB Friends, I am considering a trip to Malaga in the spring and would be very grateful for any suggested sites/areas that I should visit as well as optimum time to travel (given that we cannot predict the weather). Amongst my target species would be Spanish Festoon, Desert Orange Tip and Monar...

Re: Kev Ling
I'm pleased to say that Silver Studded Blues are having a bumper year on the Suffolk Heaths. My local site Purdis Heath has seen a record number count of 589, almost doubled from last year. This is despite our local Butterfly Conservation group being unable to do any habitat management in recent yea...
