Wurzel

Cracking diary from your holiday last year. My favourite is the Lang's Short Tailed Blue on Day 5 Part 1. Those marine blue eye spots are far more prominent than the one I saw in France a couple of years ago. They almost sparkle.

Re: Kev Ling

Thanks Wurzel, I was lucky enough to have several eggs laid on my Garlic Mustard. With the help of some fine netting, I managed to protect the final instar caterpillars from predation and kept an eye on where they pupated. No after many months of waiting, I hoep to see my first ever Orang Tip hatch....

Re: Kev Ling

At last Easter weekend and I have some limited time off work to enjoy the garden. With Millie the spaniel needing a walk, I have a quiet route planned to hopefully bag my first Orange Tip on the wing. I say on the wing, because I have already seen my first one of the year, albeit in pupal form in my...

My offerings are from Strumpshaw Fen on 3rd June 2019. A fantastic morning spent with Patrick Barkham and other UK Butterfly members. When I look out of the window at storm after storm it seems a world away.

Pete,

It was wonderful to meet you yesterday and thank you for attending our Branch AGM. Your talk was inciteful and entertaining. I particularly loved the account of the Large Blue larva.

Guy,
Can I also say how happy I was to meet you yesterday too.

Ramsey Wood - Near Ipswich I visited my local Silver Washed Fritillary patch at the weekend, where numbers were building nicely. I saw 15 in total including a female and this lovely example, which I think is ab Confluens Ramsey Wood - 7.7 (18).JPG Ramsey Wood - 7.7 (19).JPG Ramsey Wood - 7.7 (15).JP...

Wurzel, Loving those Pearls at Bentley Wood, they look amazing as do the Marshies. I like how your diary runs a few weeks behind. Whilst everyone is posting Emperors, Purple Hairstreaks and Admirals, it's nice to be taken back to spring.

Guy, I have been thoroughly enjoying your diary from Switzerland. It's a country I adore and have been fortunate to visit a couple of times. Every time I see you diaries, the longing to return gets even greater. Flying back from Geneva, was that due to you being based in the Vaud or Rhone Valley? My...

Silver Washed Fritillary ab

Hi,

Photographed this Silver Washed Fritillary in Suffolk today and was wondering if it is perhaps ab Confluens.
I would be grateful if anyone could confirm.

Wurzel,

Nice photos of the Brimstone courtship. It's always nice to see some different behaviour. Nice Marshies too, but the prize goes to the Brown Argus on the flower head, perfect shot.

Dave,

Cracking diary this week. Love the Heath Frits. I normally do an annual trip to Hockley Woods and Hadleigh CP, but alas not this year. Nice SSBs. When fresh they are one of the most beautiful butterflies.

Trevor,

Loving the WLH photos. They always seemed so elusive to me until a couple of years ago, when I shot a sequence with my iPhone, they were so close. Still waiting for my first White Admirals of the year, so your photos have whetted my appetite.

Essex, always nice to see a Small Tortoiseshell photo. It's a shame they are not as common place as they should be.

Great photos from Dartmoor Callum. Those high brown's are delightful. Just as incredible are the number of Green Hairstreak sightings still being made as we knock on July's door. Nice find.

David,

Nice photos the HBF. This is a species I have seen only once in the UK (many years ago in Exmoor NP). Timings of my holidays generally mean I can't get down to the west country at this time of the year. At least I have your photos to enjoy.

Nice images from your day dilettante. I too was out in a similar habitat today. As you say, you don't need any rarities to have a good time. Just seeing so many butterflies on the wing is what days like this are all about.

Ernie,

A very entertaining post from you today. Your anti bite suit is a little out of my price range though. I'll see fi I can pick one up at a car boot sale

Those Purplestreak photos are a delight and capture some very interesting behaviour, something I haven't seen before.

Re: Kev Ling

Wurzel, generally when the larva pupates, the head detaches and drops to the floor. In this case it has remained stuck to the pupal case.
