I spent much of July and August in Spain so i never got to see this beautiful fritillary on home soil. However i was lucky enough to find a few in a meadow in Spain in July. I managed a few photos and this was my favourite, taken early morning.

Re: Silver-spotted Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2012
Several trips to Aston Rowant produced plenty of Silver Spotted Skippers last year. The first of my favourites was taken on July 28th (i think it's friend is some sort of mirid bug). The second image was also taken on the same day, as was the third. Silver Spotted Skipper2.jpg Silver Spotted Skipper...

Re: Silver-studded Blue - Favourite Photo of 2012
I only made one trip to Prees Heath in search of this little gem last year. It was July 5th and it was a warm day with some long sunny spells. I have three favourite images from the day, the first being a male photographed on the Bell Heather. There were several copulating pairs around including the...

Re: Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2012
A visit to Rewell Wood on May 2nd produced several Pearl Bordered Fritillaries (including this beauty resting in blubells) amid cool cloudy conditions, ideal for photography. PBF.jpg At the end of May i visited the Wyre Forest where i managed open wing shots both from above and below. pearl bordered...

Re: Orange-tip - Favourite Photo of 2012
The first butterfly that i really photographed in earnest this year, and with quite a lot of success (my Orange Tip folder contains some 2,800 images). I have to agree with Neil, every time i see an Orange Tip i smile to myself, maybe in anticipation of the season to come, or maybe because they are ...

Re: Marbled White - Favourite Photo of 2012
A trip to Twywell CP on July 19th saw an abundance of Marbled Whites. A mixture of sunshine and showers saw these wonderful butterflies resting for short periods enabling me to grab an open wing shot. Marbled White2.jpg The neat two images were taken at Aston Rowant on July 21st and 27th respectivel...

Re: Annual 2012 Competition
Congratulations to John for winning with a stunning Sooty Copper image. I myself am very happy with second place as the standard was very high, so a big thank you to the judges from me. I would also like to congratulate my nine year old son Ben on achieving first and second place in the Under 16 cat...

Re: Heath Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2012
A 300 mile round trip to East Blean Woods on June 26th provided me with my first ever views of this beautiful butterfly, and what wonderful views they were. Several individuls were sitting around on Ragged Robin awaiting the sun which appeared for short spells. Also seen were many mating pairs, all ...

Re: Grizzled Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2012
A visit to Rewell Wood in search of Pearl Bordered Fritillaries at the beginning of May yielded a single fresh Grizzled Skipper that sat still for ages awaiting the sun, which was hiding behind thick grey cloud. Grizzled Skipper.jpg At the end of May i visited Ryton Woods in Warwickshire where i fou...

Re: Green Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2012
My favourite Green Hairstreak image was captured at Ryton woods in May. I was watching five Grizzled Skippers all on the same patch of Forget-Me-Nots when this beautiful little hairstreak came down to feed. It was one of those magical moments that i happily shared with my nine year old son Ben who w...

Re: Glanville Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2012
A trip to Sand Point at the end of May provided me with my first views of this beautiful species on home soil. The weather was glorious and i saw many Glanvilles zooming around busily feeding. As evening fell i found a few roosting individuals including this one which seemed to be missing most of it...

Up until this year i had never seen this species and the first thing that struck me was how small they are. Several trips to Rodborough Common in May yielded good numbers and i managed to photograph several individuals.

Re: Common Blue - Favourite Photo of 2012
Sadly not as common as the name suggests but i did find a good colony of first brooders at Bishop's Hill in Warwickshire during several visits to see Small Blues. Two of my favourite images were taken at Bishop's Hill, the first which is my best attempt yet at an open wing shot was taken on May 24th...

Re: Clouded Yellow - Favourite Photo of 2012
I have yet to see this wonderful species in Britain, but fortunately for me my girlfriend lives in Spain where it is plentiful. The first image was taken in August in a meadow in Miraflores de la Sierra to the north of Madrid. The second, which i believe is a Berger's Clouded Yellow was also taken i...
