Re: May 2010 sightings

It was good to see a couple of Glanville Fritillaries on the wing at Sand Point today. I've no idea how this colony survives, or how much assistance it receives, but whoever's making it happen gets my wholehearted support.

The high: Large Blues at Collard Hill. Important, significant, iconic even - I just wasn't expecting them to be so beautiful.
The low: All that rain, day after day. Nevertheless, 42 reasons to be cheerful in and around Bristol.

Lord's Wood

Sheer determination/desperation drove us to Lord's Wood today in the most unpromising conditions. For about five minutes the rain stopped, the sun shone and bingo - our first White Admiral of the year. I suppose they're as desperate to get out as we are.

There have been several sightings at Sand Point this year (see "Glanville Fritillary in Somerset" under "Sightings") but I'm not aware of any at Brean.

Large Blue

Meadow Browns, Marbled Whites and a single Large Blue seen today at Collard Hill. I hope there are plenty more on the way - it's a very beautiful butterfly.

David Head up the hill to the trig point at ST327660. From there follow a rough path down towards the south west. After a couple of styles there's an obvious clearing with lots of large daisies growing. We saw three individuals, sufficiently approachable that I was able to photograph them using my m...

Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary in Bristol

I photographed this Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary yesterday at Ashton Court meadow on the edge of Bristol. It hasn't been recorded here before - the nearest stronghold is Dolebury Warren, 12 miles away. So the question is, did it make the journey by itself or did it receive assistance? The damage ...
