Re: October 2016

Hi Russ, My wife and I did that very same walk back in the summer! Plenty of Ringlets but little else then but an excellent pint in the Ship (I think it's the Ship) and some good bird spotting at the ponds behind the pub (Black Tailed Godwit, Ruff, Long Eared Owl, Little Grebe, Grasshopper Warbler (...

Re: October 2016

A rather worn Speckled Wood seen in Black Poplar Woods at WWT Llanelli yesterday (13/10) and several RAs and Large Whites seen at RSPB Newport the day before (12/10). Although the highlight was a Hobby at Newport and a couple of Curlew Sandpipers at Llanelli.

Re: Dragonfly ID please, Switzerland

Hi Mikhail An interesting point about the face colouring in the Dijkstra/Lewington field guide. I have the Brooks/Lewington Dragonflies and Damselflies of Gt. Britain and Ireland which shows the Keeled Skimmer with a bluish face. If nothing else it shows how the field guides themselves differ! Kevin.

Re: September 2016

HI Chris,

I'm pretty sure your dragonfly is an immature Migrant Hawker. I took a similar shot last month as below.

Cheers,

Kevin.

A solitary Peacock seen today near Oxwich on the Gower. This one is clearly leaving hibernation to the last minute!

Re: August 2016

Small White egg-laying down here in our South Wales garden but on Alyssum which surprised me. Alyssum leaves are very small.

Re: Dingy Skippers - do you know any better sites than this?

Hi ferny,

Great stuff, I'll add Rhydymwyn to our sites list. I also note White Letter Hairstreak, Small Heath and Grayling at the reserve. Are you able to supply a full species listing (ignoring any doubtful sightings)? Thanks again and apologies for all the requests!

Hi ferny,

Could we have the name and location of your site? We'd like to add it to our site listings if possible.

Thanks,

Kevin.

Re: Moth to ID please

I think it's most likely to be a Dusky Sallow. I took the one below near Bourton-on-the Water a couple of years ago.

Re: July 2016

Just spent a very pleasant three days in South Devon, near Dartmouth, walking sections of the South West Coast Path and the Dart Valley Trail. Over the three days we saw good numbers of Meadow Browns, Hedge Browns and Whites (Large/Small/GV), small numbers of Speckled Wood, a handful of Ringlets, Pe...

Re: July 2016

A rather worn Ringlet appeared in the back garden this morning - a first for the garden. It was vigorously, but unsuccessfully, chased by a male House Sparrow before settling on the house wall. It stayed there until the sun briefly broke through, some two hours in total. It roused itself, nectared b...

Re: UKB Site Listings

Hi Matsukaze, Thanks for the Westbury Beacon note. It does already appear in our sites listings as 'Westbury Beacon BC Reserve' including all the species you mentioned. What would be very useful is an indication of how numerous each of the species is, if you know that level of detail. Thanks again. ...
