Cley Marshes is also great for birding. I was there a couple of weeks ago - Marsh Harrier, Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Avocet with chicks, Lapwing with chicks, Redshank, Skylark. An excellent visitor centre as well.

Re: April 2016
Spent a few days in Pembrokeshire during the week. Conditions sunny but a strong cold wind. Only saw two butterflies, a small copper and an unidentified blue near Solva on the 27th. Good walking though.

Did see a Brimstone in the garden day before yesterday (6/4) in Newport so maybe South Wales is now waking up!

Re: Monarch butterflies in Madeira
Hi Mark,
I agree Atlantic Canary is the likeliest id. The territory of the Citril Finch, according to my Complete Birds of Britain and Europe, would definitely rule out Madeira, and, as you say, the bill isn't right.
Thanks,
Kevin.

UKB Site Listings
As Locations Coordinator for UKB I have been, over the last few months, researching potential butterfly sites not yet listed via our excellent Site Listings directory. The main thrust of our exercise is to record locations where the less common species are found (with the exclusion of sensitive site...

Re: Depth of field in digital photography
I think the RAW vs JPEG is a perennial argument for digital photographers. If you do shoot in JPEG then it is essential to get your shot set correctly in terms of exposure and white balance. If highlights are blown out and shadow detail is lost they cannot be recovered in a JPEG image whereas they c...

Re: Monarch butterflies in Madeira
No Guy unfortunately I did not see any Pararge xiphia while we were there. But there were some mauve/blue small butterflies, very active did not manage to get any pictures. Did not also manage to identify them. Lots of grey wagtails and siskin in the hotel garden, the hotel was set in a huge garden...

Re: October 2015
Superb day on the Gower yesterday (20th). An excellent walk along Rhossili beach to Hill End and then back to Rhossili over the downs. Very few butterflies about but did spot a Red Admiral and a Wall on the downs.

Red Admiral Party
On recent visit to Jersey I took the following photo of a number of Red Admirals feeding on tree sap. There are 8 in the photo (apologies for the quality of the photo) and there were at least a dozen Red Admirals overall in the area. Is this a commonplace occurrence? Peresonally I've never seen this...

Welcome to the site. Your photo is a Scarlet Tiger moth which can be quite variable.
