Re: September 2022

Yes. QoS is quite a hardy species - Guy Padfield regularly sees them in January & February in Switzerland when the air temperature is in single figures!! I frequently see them at high altitude on the continent in conditions far less 'balmy' than 16 degrees, so I can say with some confidence tha...

Re: September 2022

It's looking like Sunday might be the only available opportunity for the Queen Of Spain's for some time after today if the forecast is accurate. However, even Sunday is suggesting the temperature will max out at only 16 degrees around 2pm. Do people think they'll show in that kind of temperature? Th...

Re: Hummingbird Hawk Moth?

I wouldn't want to bet against that being a HBHM. The description sounds about right and there has been a very large influx this year. I regularly see them in the NW so your northerly location isn't a problem. Thanks. Are there any other hovering moths in the UK at this time of year and geographica...

Hummingbird Hawk Moth?

All summer I've been wanting to join the HHM gang, considering travelling over to Bempton Cliffs when a couple were hanging around, but never managing to go. I'd just cut the buddleia back that's in my back garden as it had finished flowering, (during a poor year for it). The one in the front I can ...

Re: Anyone Help With I'd?

Thanks. What does the term "instar" mean? Caterpillars go through typically 5 stages of growth. Each stage is called an "instar." As a caterpillar grows, it "molts" 5 times before it becomes a chrysalis. Each time it molts the caterpillar progresses to the next instar ...

Anyone Help With I'd?

Can anyone help with the identification of this caterpillar? You can't see it on the pic. but it had two black lines across the back just below the head.

Pale Tussock?

Thanks.

Re: August 2022

Surprised there's no mention of the current Long-tailed Blues in the sightings section. Am I looking in the wrong place; special section for rares? I haven't looked back to see if the recent Queen of Spain Fritillaries were reported either. Thanks. there is plenty about them on this page: https://u...

Hi Neil, as someone travelling from the North wanting to try and score with LtB this year, when will be the optimum date and location. Do you have directions for Whitehawk Hill?
Thanks very much.

Moth Traps

It's something I've never really dabbled with, being more interested in butterflies than moths. Should people use them? Is there any detriment to the moths? It seems logical to me to think not; a moth that was planning a night of feeding, egg-laying etc. is prevented from doing so, and is then relea...

Monks Wood, Cambs. The first Black Hairstreak sightings were on 27th May at Monks Wood (Philib) and Brampton Wood (Roger Orbell). The weather was nice early on today, sunny but cool and breezy, but set to deteriorate over the course of the morning so I arrived 9am. I saw one perched up high but was...

Nearby. Bonchurch.
Cheers.
