Re: Brown/Northern Brown Argus
The closest I've ever come is this definite Brown Argus from last July.BA2 020722.JPGThe white spot (when there is one) always seems to have a black centre in Brown Argus, whereas in NBA it is clear white. I'd say from this rough rule of thumb that your shot is of an NBA. Dave Just out of interest ...

Re: Brown/Northern Brown Argus
I think the weak orange markings also support the identification of the one I saw, maybe?

Brown/Northern Brown Argus
Can Brown Argus ever show a clear white upper wing spot? If so, how common is this?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: May 2023
On my return journey home from Devon, I popped into Lulworth. On a sheltered bank near Stair Hole I found a single of the local speciality.LWS SITE VIEW.JPGLWS1 240523.JPG Also seen: Adonis Blue (the most frequently encountered one), Common Blue, Brown Argus, Dingy Skipper, Brimstone, Wall, Peacock...

Re: March 2023
Apparently it was present to at least the 4th April. Would have been nice for observers to share it's lingering presence. Hay ho.

Re: 2023 - Large Tortoiseshell
For all this year's reports so far, I haven't seen one that's spanned two days. Is that likely to be the lack of a return visit from the original finder, and no follow-up from anyone, or is this species notoriously "in and out?"

Re: September 2022
A tough but very rewarding day providing two new British butterflies for me. Hello Lawts, good to meet you too and as I said on the day, I salute you for a sterling performance. :D As with many others I spent Sunday afternoon in the company of my very first Long Tailed Blues down in Worthing. A gre...

Re: September 2022
Re "A tough but very rewarding day providing two new British butterflies for me". Well you deserve those 2 lifers, Lawts, after that marathon trek and especially with the cost of fuel at the moment. The headache will disappear and you will be left with the photos as a permanent memory. I ...

Re: September 2022
A tough but very rewarding day providing two new British butterflies for me. So glad you caught up with both of them following that marathon effort, Lawts. It surely can't be long before Long Tailed Blue is considered a sufficiently regular immigrant to be assigned UK status, like Clouded Yellow. T...

Re: September 2022
A tough but very rewarding day providing two new British butterflies for me. I set off from Wetherby just after 5am. A good run down to Walmer with no real hold-ups, arriving around 9.45, with one stop at Medway services. I was surprised how cloudy it still was in the south-east corner as I drove th...

Yes thanks very much Neil.Neil Hulme wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 3:11 pm Hi Lawts
Very briefly - full report later - yes, all looks good. Only one at the start of the day, but nine by early/mid afternoon, although two mated females have already flown south. Best time to be there, 12.00-2.30pm.

Re: September 2022
In reply to Lawts. How would you rate the chance of success tomorrow? No news for two days now, but presumably due to the weather down there at the moment. There has been 2 days of rain on the East Kent coast so maybe no one looking. Tomorrow's weather is predicted to be much better. With at least ...

Re: September 2022
TR36097/50365 will take you to start of the footpath. Nearest postcode CT14 9JN. Its actually only a 10 minute walk from Walmer station for anyone using public transport. One thing to note is limited car parking actually at the crossroads. Otherwise park near station and walk down. How would you ra...

Re: Neil Hulme
Hi Lawts That count might reference an earlier day by mistake, when that sort of number was present along the entire seafront (e.g. 18 Sept), or it might be someone's count of sightings, rather than individuals - I'm not sure. The weather was poor for the front part of the day on 22 September, and ...

Re: Neil Hulme
22 September 2022 It had to happen, so after five glorious days of Long-tailed Blue action on Worthing beach, things were much quieter on 22 September; unsurprising, given the overcast conditions throughout the morning. When the sun eventually broke through in the afternoon, I could only muster a c...
