Re: Arnside Knott
Thanks for the MR info. - I think it will be next year for me now with upcoming commitments. I went back to Arnside this afternoon. I bumped into a chap who had been searching for HBF all day without luck. I went back to where I had been told they had been seen on Sunday - near the "giraffe tre...
Re: june 2011
Spent the day in the Lake District. The gorgeous weather allowed me to see one of my bogey species, the Mountain Ringlet. There were around 10-15 just south of the Drumhouse near Honister Slate Quarry. I then visited Whitbarrow. Despite much better conditions than on my visit last year, there was l...

Re: Arnside Knott
Several Grayling and a single Northern Brown Argus seen - also lots of Small Pearl-bordered. Hi Lawts Where exactly at Arnside did you see the Northern Brown Argus? I spent two hours extensively searching the site for them and didn't spot a single one! It's becoming my bogey species! Paul Paul, I'd...

Re: Arnside Knott
Glad to see they are out. I had a very frustrating day on Sunday. I got there at about 7.30am and finally gave up at about 4.00pm. There were lots of "High Greens" that I couldn't identify but unfortunately everyone I did identify was a Dark Green. I did speak to one person who had seen tw...

Re: Depressing news
It may be a good forecast for the south for Sunday. But here I am late Friday and it's still touch and go whether I attempt Mountain Ringlet in the Lakes on Sunday, so it's still not much of a forecast "up north!"
Re: june 2011
George, they were numerous on Irton Fell on 4 June and there may well be some individuals still around this weekend. I am having a degree of difficulty walking at the moment with torn knee ligaments. Is Irton Fell the easiest and quickest site in the Lakes for MR - (car to butterfly)? Did you park ...

Is it still a bit early for rthis species? There was the very early record in April, but no-one has mentioned any sightings since. I'm trying to gauge when best to go to Durlston Country park for them. The Durlston "daily diary" is not making any reference to them.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Glasdrum Wood
Hi Hoggers, If you DO make the trip I'd very strongly recommend Killiechonate Woods for Chequered Skippers. If they're still flying, of course! Access starts at Spean Bridge railway station. From the car park, head uphill through trees on a rough (but very obvious) track. There's a sign saying &quo...

Re: Arnside Knott
Phil, parking the Scotch Argus for a moment. I am not wishing to doubt you - how could I, I'm a relative novice, but are you confident there were no HBF's? I guess I'm just hoping as I'm planning to go on Friday specifically for this little chap. The reason I ask is threefold:- 1) They are of course...

Help With White
I'm pretty sure this is a Small White - saw it last year and the upper wing had a small greyish rather than black tip. However, I'm rubbish with the Whites so would appreciate any thoughts.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Mountain Ringlet
Notwithstanding that I've plans to meet up with Roger, I do have a free day tomorrow and based on the success of David M's recent trip, I was thnking of trying for Mountain Ringlet. I should have gone today but as people have said the forecast keeps changing and I'd seen a poor forecast for Saturday...

Visited today - arrived at 4.00pm. Saw 2-3 flying. Also Small Heath, Common Blue and Speckled Wood. It was a bit of a smash and grab - was there less than an hour.
Re: May 2011
I think all but 11 or 12 of the 59 British butterflies will have been seen by the end of May. And the day is not yet over... Dave I don't know if you've included Large Blue, but according to the Collard Hill info. line the message today confirmed the first is on the wing. No, I hadn't. Nor the WLH ...

Help With Heath Frits.
Does anyone have any up to date info. on Heath Fritillary at East Blean Woods, and also Haddon Hill in north Devon? Trying to decide whether to make a Kent trip this weekend, or attempt to see them at the same time as Large Blue in a couple of weeks in Devon. I don't want to miss out by waiting. Als...
