Re: Sussex Kipper

I'll post some of mine in the Sightings Neil, but I can tell you now they won't be a patch on yours. Excellent stuff.

Re: Irton Fell - Mountain Ringlet flight time

Thanks for all the info. and suggestions. I went to Irton Fell this Sunday, and was fortunate to get excellent views and the opportunity to take some nice shots. It was a doddle in the end - twenty minute walk, Neil et al on site with one located for me. On the list.

Re: Irton Fell - Mountain Ringlet flight time

Cheers Neil. He who dares :)

I've never seen one, so I only need one to get it on the list. Any tips for seeing them? Do they allow close approach? I've read Tormentil is favoured, and I know Mike said look on bracken.

Re: Irton Fell - Mountain Ringlet flight time

The long range forecast for next weekend isn't great. I'm still thinking of giving it a go this weekend in view of the recent weather we've had. I'm told they usually emerge in late May on the lower slopes at Irton. Allowing for the cold spring, but factoring in this current weather what do people t...

Re: Irton Fell - Mountain Ringlet flight time

I'd be interested what people think re. likely/optimum date for Mountain Ringlet on Irton Fell. Last year, I saw them on the 17th but, for this species, everything depends on the weather. When I first arrived last year, the weather was cloudy and I saw none, but then the sun came out and, within mi...

Small White?

Thoughts please. I saw this butterfly in the garden about a week ago. It was very small and appeared to lack any noticeable black mark at the top of the upperwing. Pretty sure the underwing rules out Green-veined so I'm assuming Small White.

Thanks

Steve

Re: Irton Fell - Mountain Ringlet flight time

Given the cold Spring I'd be interested what people think re. likely/optimum date for Mountain Ringlet on Irton Fell. In terms of weekend days, would you go 8-9th or 15-16th? I had been planning for the earlier one, but am having second thoughts.

Thanks

Re: September 2012

Hi Lawts, News less than an hour old is that it's visible - roosting in conifer close to the buddleia it frequents. Neil Thanks. There again today as well. Just needs to stay one more day - and another one in Flamborough but not sticking just to tease. Will there be any Lulworth Skippers left whils...

Re: September 2012

Just got back from a visit to Portland in Dorset for the Monarch that was found today. It was nectaring on a buddleia in a small park/patch of open ground off Park Estate Road near the Health Centre in Easton, Portland. It looked a bit worse for wear but was still stunning to see in the sunshine. I...

Long-tailed Blue and now a Camberwell Beauty in kent. Do many people attempt to twitch rare butterflies - just seems so much harder than going for a bird? I know the Titchwell CB was well watched.

Re: Great Orme

Would people expect Silver-studded Blue to still be flying at Great Orme or do you think they will have finished - planning a trip for Chough this weekend and wanted to tie in?

Thanks.

Great Orme

Do people think that Silver-studded Blues will be out yet on the Great Orme yet, or is it too early?

Thanks.

I'm confused. I thought the Isle of Wight was the only place to get the genuine article?

Re: Best Week For Chequered Skipper

Thanks to all for info. and advice leading up to my visit to Glasdrum on the 26th. In perfect weather I connected with CS within a minute of arriving. There was one in the car park that was pointed out to me and it showed well for several minutes and I left it on view - jackpot. As I had three tired...

Re: Best Week For Chequered Skipper

Well it's only a week away. At the risk of everyone falling about laughing have any been seen yet at Glasdrum, (he said searching for bobble hat and gloves)? I am seriously thinking of staying longer on Mull and enjoying the birds for the day, rather than catching the early ferry and going to Glasdr...
