Re: Dingy Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2011

I'm going to cheat on this one,as my favourite pic was taken last year on the 14th May.This is because it is one of the first photos I took with a digital camera and of course it shows that a Dingy Skipper is definitely not dingy. Top pic however is 2011 taken on 23rd April, again at Afton Down on th...

Re: Clouded Yellow - Favourite Photo of 2011

I must admit that this is one species I have great difficulty in approaching in order to get a pic.As for my favourite photo of a CY,well I only have two and this is the better one,I think. This one was snapped in Greece,at the end of May. and there was certainly no shortage of these butterflies fly...

Re: Chalkhill Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

This is my favourite pic of a CHB this year as I spied it in my back garden on 3rd September.
This is the first time that I have noticed this species here as i am less than 100 yards from the Colwell Bay shoreline and their usual habitat on the Downs is some distance away

Re: October 2011 sightings

The late summer sunshine still held on today on the Isle of Wight, and I was rewarded with a sighting of a Wall on the clifftop at Whale Chine on the southwest coast. At Clamerkin NT near Yarmouth, small coppers were enjoying the sunshine as well. This pair seemed to be still energetic as the top butte...

Re: September 2011

After the brisk winds of yesterday,Wednesday promised some sun.So a walk around Clamerkin NT near to Newport on the Isle of Wight. The sun did show for a short while until cloud and rain returned this afternoon.just enough time though to spot this Painted Lady in her best outfit and a handsome Commo...

Re: A Few more from Greece for confirmation

Yes,the two tailed pasha,a lovely butterfly and as said a sucker for ripe fruit.
This one was defending his Fig tree, bulging with ripe fruits, from all comers.
it was not going to leave the tree and allowed a close approach, and landed several times on my shoulder.

Re: A Few more from Greece for confirmation

A lovely set of pics and this entry has corrected one of my photo efforts from a visit to Lefkada, thanks. What I had down as a Eastern Large Heath is of course the Lattice Brown. My IDs are notoriously suspect even though I make use of the Tolman guide when abroad. As for the Grayling , again i have ...

Re: Glanville Fritillary at Wrecclesham, Surrey?

I am sure you are not talking drivel,Roger.
Perhaps just play it safe and come to the Isle of Wight to see them in their natural habitat.

Re: Glanville Fritillary

Another beautiful sunny day and a trip through Bonchurch village to Horseshoe Bay,a short distance along the Island coast from Wheelers Bay where the first Glanvilles of 2011 were reported.
Two individuals seen and in the next few weeks I hope many more to follow.
