Yes, definitely a four-spot orb web. Quite a lot of variation in colour and in the markings on this species.Philzoid wrote:I'll go and check it out.

Spider I.D
On Wednesday, me and my daughters met up with Gibster to look for Silver spotted Skippers at Box Hill zig zag. Despite some extensive serching, skippers were only noticable by their absence. Butterflies we did come across were Brown Argus, (probably the most numerous); Meadow Brown; Gatekeeper; Comm...

Hi Bill, thanks for the kind comments - I think you'll find that the remedy for Hairstreak crooked-neck is Grayling-counting opposite-crooked neck so you'll be OK in a day or so! Michael Nice one :) Yesterday I went looking for Grayling on Chobham Common. Today i'm ofto Noar Hill for Brown Hairstre...

Smashing pictures of the Grayling Wurzel
Love their crytic markings and the way they use them and position themselves to just blend in with the background. And, if you get a bit too close out comes the eyespot flash

even the cold blodded cannot escape 'the scourge'
During PE season the observation tower in Straits Inclosure seems to be used exclusively as a perch point by his majesty. Therefore it was nice to see this little chap (or more likely, chappess) getting in on the act. DSCN3705~1.jpg Closer inspection reveals she is not alone RSCN3850 b.jpg And I alw...

Re: ID of Catapillar and Moths please Goldie M
From the picture it is difficult to tell. Although vapourer moth larvae are more likely to be encountered, for me the defining feature, or in this case lack of, is the vapourer's forward pointing head bristles which are not evident. Also the lateral bristles/tubercles of the vapourer are red(-ish) w...

Re: Large White (not for the faint-hearted)
This poor male ....... still had enough life left to crawl and to flap its remaining wing. This seemed to have been enough to tempt another individual to try to mate with it. The butterfly that attempted to mate with it was another male :?: (I assume females don't hunt down males). If that was the ...

Definitely Vapourer and a common species that turns up in many places. Last year at our workplace we had hundreds feeding on a Hazel hedge. Within this hedge is situated a bus shelter type building that the employers have provided for the the smokers. Unfortunately for one of the smokers a caterpill...

Apologies for late posting Thanks to the fine weather on Monday 11th I went to Denbies after a short stint in Straits (no PE's that morning although I got to see a couple there the previous day). I'm disappointed that I didn't get to meet both Gibster and Susie, perhaps because I didn't stray too fa...

Re: Purple Emp ......Hairtreak!
Some great shots there! I too went looking for Purple Emperor, didn't find it but did photograph a male Purple Hairstreak (I'll add to my personal diary later)...is this a case of synchronicity, great minds thinking alike...or fools never differing? I haven't heard that one before "fools never...

Went to Straits inclosure in the hope of seeing Purple Emperors. Didn't see any but saw this little beauty instead :o DSCN3649.jpg DSCN3663~1.jpg RSCN3812.jpg More like a PE than a PH, he was spotted on the path and just to convince us he was not dead, he'd occasionally raise his wings together and ...

Re: ronniethepoo
Hi philzoid you've lost me completely here! I have purposely not explored all the 'pose' shots as they are exactly that - static shots which may be technically near-perfect, the challenge being the photographic perfection rather than the interest of the image (I presume) Hi Ronniethepoo I apologise...

Re: ronniethepoo
I like your pictures Ronnie but whenever I've got them I've always considered them as the ones that got away (basically they've been accidents, but impressive none the less). I suppose when you've explored all the 'normal pose shots' the next logical challenge would be to photo them in their element...
