Re: July 2012
Probably the last chance for a grounded Emperor had me up to Straits Inclosure Alice Holt on Saturday. Unlike the previous week the numbers of spotters were down reflecting perhaps that PE season is past its peak, at least for getting grounded individuals. About half-way along Straits a group has as...
Re: July 2012
When the sun went in, she then 'rested' at least 15 feet up on the bow of an oak, but closer inspection of the photograph appears to show her ovipositing here too, which seems unusual? Female SWF's do lay on tree-trunks presumably because there is a greater chance of predation on the ground or that...

Re: July 2012
On Thursday I made an early morning trip before work to Dawneys Ridge for Silver-studded Blue. Lots of little flag roosters at 07:00 but by 07:30 many were avoiding having their picture taken and taking to the wing. A.jpg B.jpg C.jpg D.jpg Graylings were in a more difficult league when it came to ge...

Congratulations on getting the Emperors Wurzel  :) . Judging by the postings it seems like everyone has seen a grounded one this season except me :( And it looks like the weather isn't going to hold for the coming weekend :( :!: Looking at your pictures it is hard to tell whether the ...

Re: Small Copper?
I keep hearing reports of low numbers and the decline of the small tortoiseshell, I think they've all moved to the farm I live on We have a rough area behind some farm buildings and the thistles are covered in st's , I've never seen so many in one place. Can you send em back to Surrey  I have ...
Re: July 2012
angelena labrynthica for your spider Phil and surely 2 of your SSB must be aberrations as opposed to variation. Thanks for that Chris. Such a lovely and apt name. Perhaps it's labyrinth helped it escape out the 'back door'. No. 2 SSB reminds me a bit of the Adonis Blue Aberrants, (lots last year) w...
Re: July 2012
Two (late) posts in one 20/07/12 Arriving home after work I was surprised to see a butterfly in my front garden. When I identified it as a Small Skipper I was even more surprised :o because my garden amounts to a small 10ft by 6ft patch of grass in a mid-terrace suburban house on a council estate: m...

Morning to the two of you. I - and I am sure others would do the same - will give an amount equal to my previous donation if you follow this splendid chap's example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-18873631 Photographic proof needed. To eliminate cheating (such as picture take...

Re: July 2012
A forecast for another 'sunny' Sunday (Sundays seem, the best of a bad bunch) had me and Izzy off to Alice Holt, a great place for woodland butterflies with the possibility of seeing Purple Emperor. The entrance to Straits Inclosure is lined with tall thistles which were the perfect nectaring posts ...

Re: Small Copper?
Have to echo your concern Wurzel :| . Normally I see Small Coppers in 2's and 3's (and sometimes in bigger numbers) often without going out of my way to look for them. This year I've seen one, on a windswept Denbies in April. Since then, nothing :( . I suspect that as often we get pre-occupied with ...
Re: July 2012
Late posting from Thursday. A sunny morning on the 12th of July had me switching my leave from Friday to Thursday and heading off to Alice Holt to try and snatch a glimpse of His Majesty. First port of call was my favourite Straits Inclosure. Lots of butterflies made it an interesting and entertaini...
Re: July 2012
I have tried without success to photograph marbled whites which actually are often more a creamy colour than pure white. They always come out white though. Anyone with ideas why that is? Ian Had a look at your MW photo Ian and it looks OK to me but I'm no expert. Perhaps the colour balance is sligh...

I didn't realise how well you were doing with your shots there Wurzel. Some of those Silver-washed Fritillaries are Beauts
Looking at the moth I think it might be a Wainscott (noctuid), though not sure which one.
Looking forward to the DGF's
