Re: Wurzel

It's ramping up nicely Wurzel :D Your Sooty and Weavers have turned out much better than mine from France  , the Dusky Large Blue and QoS are real beauts   and as for the large fritillary I'd have been quite happy with a High Brown having never seen this species :( . If yo...

Re: Wurzel

Great report Wurzel :D . You're already beginning to capture the trials and tribulations that a family holiday, nature spotting combination invariably brings. Fantastic setting too   . Shame the weather couldn't have been cooler for you all. Looking forward to the next interesting an...

Re: Fritillaries from Southern France part 2

Thanks very much Roger and for dissecting out the various clues to parthenoides :D . I'm also pleased to have persisted with the Pyronia cecilia with big thanks to Chris Jackson for spotting my error and for his back-up photos and info :) . Must stop looking at these at midnight! That's because ther...

Re: Fritillaries from Southern France part 2

I see what you mean about the slash ... "oblique in s1b" and image H certainly has it better than the others.

Thanks David :)

Re: Fritillaries from Southern France part 2

I'd say H is parthenoides. Not at all sure about the pyronia. Is that Just H? Not sure what the distinguishing feature is for parthenoides but the forewing broken post discal line is one of the features I've been using going for and D looks a good candidate .... perhaps :? wonder if Guy can chip in...

Re: Fritillaries from Southern France.

A quick look (it's late) suggests L and O are parthenoides . Roger Image M looks good too. D'accord. I didn't comment on that one as Phil had already indicated M as parthenoides . I think you got your eye in on these now, David. Roger Thanks for that guys :D . I meant but forgot to mention that the...

Fritillaries from Southern France.

Those of you who read my holiday to France series will remember that there were some difficulties in getting ID's for the photos of Melitaea Fritillary species that were very abundant out there. For my part I decided to list them all as 'Heath' Fritillary Melitaea 'athalia', but was aware that other...

Re: Holiday to France Part 7

And another species added to the lifer list    A cracking read over the last couple of weeks, great shots and I'm disappointed that it's all over...unless you have a few more shots/lifers to post  :D Hi Wurzel I posted my reply as yours was coming through (that's happened...

Re: Holiday to France Part 7

Thanks very much for your comments Charles; Mark and David :D . Glad you liked the story as well as the butterflies (and moths). I like the shot of the city from the air too, and it entered my mind lots of times of what it would be like to go there and look around rather than just drive from and to ...

Holiday to France Part 7

2015.08.28 IMG_5376_1.jpg With time getting on I decided to risk a 'short-cut' from Ordino to Canillo. It didn't quite work out that way as the road (CS-240) was probably the most steepest tortuous mountain road I've ever driven on (and I've had lots of practice in Tenerife) The poor hire car must'...

Re: Holiday to France (and Andorra) Part 6

More fantastic stuff Philzoid In terms of lifers you must be surpassing my 13 easily by now surely? And if not you've certainly got some of the more interesting ones compared to my haul  :D Your lifer haul is certainly more than mine Wurzel :) . I've 10 definites and 2 possibles. All thing...

Re: Holiday to France (and Andorra) Part 6

That was quick Guy :o :D . The Spanish Brassy ringlet was one I didn't consider too seriously (don't know why now that I've looked back again in my Collins Tolman guide after your ID). In my final Part 7 I have considered 2 more species on top of Gavarnie and as it's already written out I'll post as...

Holiday to France (and Andorra) Part 6

Rejuvenated by my days' butterflying I was back on track to carrying out my plan to visit Andorra and although Sharon was in two minds about it, my eldest daughter's enthusiasm for going ensured I got my way. This was to be our last full day before returning to England and more than anything I was d...

Re: Wurzel

Some great photos there Wurzel. Great exposure of that 2nd Red Admiral against the sky.

In case you didn't know there is a butterfly related to the Comma called the Question Mark Polygonia interrogationis (though I prefer Batman's arch enemy) . A species native to North America :)

Re: Holiday to France Part 5

I'm glad you got so many lifers, Phil. It makes holidays even more worthwhile. Most definitely. Lots of great moments. :D I loved the narrative of your unfortunate scene in the "English pub", although probably frustrating for you at the time. Hilarious - well told Thanks Chris. I was conc...

Re: Holiday to France Part 5

Thanks again Guy. You mentioned the tails too which on the first 'afternoon butterfly' seemed to haver longer tails that the barely noticeable ones on the morning 'meadow example' in Part 4 (I'm getting my days mixed up too  ). To avoid more internet misinformation I'll go and edit now :) .

Re: Holiday to France Part 5

Hello Guy. Yes I thought this might come up. The reason why I called it Short-tailed and not Provencal S-t was that I perceived this butterfly as considerably larger than the first one I saw in the meadow in the morning (Part 4). This size difference shows up in the illustration in my Collins Field ...
