Re: Wurzel
That second to last shot wouldn’t happen to be a three species one would it :o ? It’s late July but it feels like summer has gone based on what I’m not getting my garden moth trap. Was heading for a record number of species this year but recently numbers have fallen off much earlier than expected. M...

Re: Wurzel
Hi Wurzel So disappointed not to have made it to Daneweay this year :( . Last year we had a great day out, with butterflies galore not to forget the ‘characters’ we met too :) . It’s been quite a contrast over the two visits. Last year it was nearly all open-wing whist this year mostly undersides an...

Re: Wurzel
The site is amazing, with butterflies all over the place, and 95% of them are Heath Fritillaries. This year, the only other things I saw were a few Meadow Browns and a single White Admiral. Indeed. When we went there in 2015 it was a solitary Heath fest. The only other butterfly seen I think was a ...

Re: Butterflysaurus rex
I hope we have better luck next time Phil. Yep, Glanvilles escaped me this year. I tried Wrecclesham also too but to no avail :( (partly due to early emergences catching me out). Hopefully the numbers at Hutchinson’s will be back to the levels seen in 2016. That Small Blue is real beaut James :D .....
Re: Guard-hog
Thanks for the confirmation Wurzel :) That Lark took some careful stalking and I would never have got it without the Lumix FZ-72. :D Would not recommend it for butterflies though :| The Grayling was a case of perseverance paying off :D Straits looks to be getting back to some of its former glory wit...

On Saturday the 17th I’d met up with Wurzel and had headed out to East Blean woods to see lots of Heath Fritillaries and a fair few White Admirals too. It was a cracking day’s butterflying :D . I’m a built late on the scene (catching up with your diary that is) . I have to say the picture of mating pair of Dingy skippers is brilliant as is the Small Blue with green-blue overtones  . And, as you say, the Small Pearl was put on a plate for me … out the car … into the clearing...

Re: June 2017
I decided to pay a visit to Hutchinson’s Bank for Glanville fritillary although reports were not encouraging. And so, it turned out to be, and I dipped on the species I’d come to see :( Some species were in abundance though; Common Blue and in particular Small Blue although most were past their best...

Looking forward to meeting up at Bentley. May bring my 'grown-up' daughters along if I can drag them away from their lap-tops

Re: April 2017
A couple of weeks ago I paid a visit to Riverside Park Nature reserve, Guildford and noticed a profusion of cuckoo flower … ideal for Orange-tips and perhaps a little bit more ‘peaceful’ than my usual haunt for this species:- the Basingstoke canal towpath in Woking which has become severely ‘inundat...

Re: March 2017
Taking advantage of finishing work an 'hour earlier' today, courtesy of the clocks going forward I was able to fit in a recce at the Bronze-age Burial mound at Maybury, Woking. At a place where the pines meet the heather in an area no greater that 10m2 (thankfully cleared of encroaching birch scrub)...

Re: March 2017
After a February, Red admiral sighting at London WWT and reading about Wurzel’s butterfly extravaganza at 5 rivers I was hoping things would kick on. Unfortunately, not the case. Weekend weather generally came out worse on the forecasts, my own Comma Corner normally reliable at this time of year :( ...

Re: Wurzel
Great Duke photos Wurzel :D . I was so glad you spotted that one on your way out of the Duke site. At the time, I was too far ‘north’ on the chalk escarpment and had to make a mad dash through the undergrowth. Perhaps that will be the ideal spot in a couple of years’ time if your theory holds :?: Th...

Re: February 2017
A trip out to London Wildfowl Wetlands centre at Barnes with my daughter turned up more expected. We took up a seat behind the large central window of the Wader scrape hide expecting to see (more) Shoveler; Teal; Wigeon and Gadwall but instead got a very pleasant surprise: - a near pristine Red Admi...

Re: lesser purple emperor in the Loire
I saw my one and only sighting further south in the midi Pyrenees region (close to Foix) on the 27th of August 2015. It was grounded on a pathway beside a small river when I inadvertently put it up. It didn't go far and perched on a leaf just over head height enabling me to get off a few pictures be...

Re: Trip to Hutchinson's Bank (and Chiddingfold)
Looks like I’ve got a fourth route to consider now   . I can’t remember how long our return through Limpsfield/Oxted took but it was probably more than 12 minutes to get back to the M25 Junction 6 Godstone turnoff. I agree it does look complicated but as you say it will probably save me ...
