Re: July 2012

Fenn's Moss on a sunny morning - plenty of Large Heath . I attempted vainly to get a picture but eventually gave up trying to find one who would settle so decided just to enjoy then fluttering past. Black Darters were out now too. Most plentiful were Ringlets and Large Skipper - both seemed to be d...

Re: July 2012

Amazingly the sun came out and went to Llynclys Common this afternoon in search of the Silver-washed Fritillary. Didn't seen any but did see lots of Ringlets and Meadow Browns plus a couple of Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries - perhaps an indication that things are running a little behind this year...

Re: How Can Ticks Be Avoided?

Long trousers are needed in my opinion if you are going anywhere to look at insects. If you're expecting to see some of our 6-legged friends chances are there are going to be species looking to feast on you!

Re: best book

I love Thomas and Lewington - ideal for reading at home on long winter evenings dreaming of hot June days :D

For a field guide I like Lewington's Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland.

Re: June 2012

Debbie you are shooting at ISO 1600 which will not produce good shots outdoors. Try setting your camera to ISO 400 (or less). Other than that there is nothing wrong with your pictures. :)

Re: June 2012

A sunny day so took the opportunity to go to Fenns and Whixall Moss. Still felt like a spring day rather than summer. No Ringlets or Meadow Browns yet. Common Blue 6 Brimstone 8 Green Hairstreak 7 Large Skipper 5 The Large Heath were in good supply - saw more than 10. Very tricky to photograph as th...

Re: Whixall Moss

All around the edge of the Moss where there are trees and wild flowers you might see Peacocks, Brimstones (Spring and then again in August), Green Hairstreaks (May and June), Ringlets and Meadow Browns (late June and July). White-faced Darter and Black Darter dragonflies also perch on shrubs on the ...

Re: Marsh fritts on Llyn Peninsula

There is this records site for North Wales

http://goo.gl/lZICZ

There are some non-recent references to Llanystumdwy and Morfa Nefyn - there may some other Lleyn locations listed there too.

Re: Is This Cuckoo Flower ?

It's a lovely flower - I have some of it in my lawn and delay mowing where it is until it's died off. I have always called it Lady's Smock.

Is anyone else noticing a distinct lack of Speckled Woods at the moment? They're usually so reliable.

Butterflies made a comeback here today after a long break since the March warm weather. A few Speckled Woods and a female Orange Tip.

Swallows

Still no sign of any in my part of the world - usually they're here around the 12th/13th. The north wind must be holding them back.

I love/hate my camera

I enjoy taking pictures of photographs of the butterflies I see - a lot of it is down to "capturing the moment" (I find I am nearly always happy when I see a butterfly) so that it can be relived later. However sometimes I think it would be nice just to enjoy them and not feel almost oblige...
