Re: Mowing

Hi A_T, Mow approximately half the field every late September/early October, and ensure that as many of the cuttings are removed as possible (raking by hand if you don't have a top-of-the-range 'cut & collect' machine!). Don't perform this to a simple half and half pattern, but try to create an...

Mowing

I have a large field in which I get plenty of meadow browns, ringlets and gatekeepers in the summer. In recent years I have left much of it to grow without cutting it at all. Is this the best way to encourage egg-laying and caterpillars - or should I be mowing the whole field at some stage during th...

It is certainly great to see so many Speckleds around - must be down to the good weather we had in June and July.

Re: Planted some common buckthorn!

In the Spring a family member saw a male Brimstone in our garden - the first we've ever seen here in over 20 years. Then today I saw another - nectaring on Valerian [pic below]. I have no doubt these were both wanderers rather than natives - but it gives hope that 2 generations of Brimstone have rea...

Re: August 2014

Saw a Clouded Yellow near Wrexham today - very unusual for these parts. The last time I saw one round here was in 2001 - although I have seen them on the north west Wales coast since. Either it's a Clouded Yellow year or the storms have blown it north and east - probably the latter.

Moth ID

Hi can anyone ID this splendid individual for me. In flight it was as large as a small tortoiseshell and even more colourful than a red admiral.

Re: June 2014

Fenn's Moss and the large heaths have emerged. These fellows must be world champs at "almost settling" - then when one does it flies away before you can get a shot. This was the best I could do not helped by forgetting my macro and having to make do with mediocre kit lens. Also lots of mea...

Re: New Book - Butterflies of Surrey

This is a superb book. I grew up in Surrey and although no longer living there this is a wonderful guide to butterflies of that county. I would recommend it to anyone wherever they lived. The detail of the information is impressive, the book is hardback, very well-bound with a dust jacket and the pa...

Quite a good programme I thought. Pitched at a good level. Chris Packham's enthusiasm is splendid.

Re: Aberrant dark green fritillary

Very interesting - I have read somewhere (Thomas and Lewington?) about a dark Scottish variation scotica but this is the first picture I've seen. Presuming this is scotica of course. Excellent work!

Re: Royal Mail Stamps showing British Butterflies July 2013

My First Day Cover came today - I have not had a FDC since I was 13 :D

The stamps look wonderful - the pictures on the web do not do them justice.
