Water for butterflies

By accident I left a sprinkler on this morning under some trees. By chance I saw five Small Whites flitting around the limits of the water and settling to drink on grass stems, as the spray circled past them they all flew up and settled again when it had passed. I surmise that in this hot weather th...

Re: July 2013

Meadow browns. Much to my joy the Meadow Browns in my meadow have appeared over the last three or four days and the numbers look as if they will be up on last year, however assuming these to be the offspring of last year's bog standard Maniola jurtina this year's early males are dark enough to be c...

Re: John R

Until today I had only seen up to four butterflies in a day in my theme park and then only occasionally. Visitor numbers were almost not worth recording, the odd Brimstone came by and a Red Admiral, then a disgruntled Large White but this morning at about 6am I saw a Meadow Brown and by mid-day ther...

Re: June 2013

Naturally this section contains "sightings" can we also have one for "non sightings" or is it just here that I am missing species and numbers? The most species in my field and garden has been 3 at any one time and in the patches I record I think I've noted 9 over the year so far....

Re: Bridge Cameras?

I bought a factory reconditioned compact Canon SX260 HS earlier this year simply because I wanted a pocket camera that I could have with me all the time and not have to lug my DSLR round the woods when I am working. Apart from no viewfinder I find myself using it more than I intended. Its 20x optica...

Now where would I find this " Flying This Week" list so that I can challenge any potential illegal immigrant for its passport? Round here it's a coach load of Orange Tips.

Green-veined White?

I presume this to be a GV White with the wings not fully inflated. It didn't seem to detract from its flying ability as I only managed to get one shot.

Re: John R

I was giving up on butterflies, nothing was nectering on my locally grown home produced flowers. The field had a good number of dandelions, cowslips, violets, the plum trees are flowering as are the cherries; the blackthorn and Amelanchier show well in the hedge but only bees turned up. The odd butt...

A strange mixture of units there. Let us please forget degrees Fahrenheit once and for all. Here, even old wizened retired professional fishermen use degrees C in everyday conversation. Jack But here in the sunny south retired, wizened, senile old soldiers still use the system that they used in the...

Re: April Sightings

I am just relieved that butterflies are appearing. In the three tetrads I watch there have been only small numbers of Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Brimstone and Red Admiral, but I live in hope. Last night I had a Robinson trap out and caught about 30 specimens of 20 species so lepidoptera have surviv...

Had a meeting today with my neighbour's gamekeeper to discuss where he is going to plant pheasant covers and where to put Environmental Stewardship mixtures and would I like some wildflower mixtures in with the nectar mixtures. The insects get two long field margins where the maize failed to hold an...

Field winter.jpg I bought this field which borders my garden soon after we moved into our house. About five years ago I got bored looking at the post and rail fence which is the boundary and after reading about corridors for wildlife I planted what I hoped would become a bird friendly hedge with be...

Re: Red dot sight for cameras

Is it safe to use lasers with birds and animals? The red dot sight does not use a laser - it is basically a reflector sight, which superimposes the aiming point on the field of view. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_dot_sight for a description. It is an up-to-date version of the old 'sports fin...

Are they serious £699 for a 7D? Even if that is ex VAT it's still £200 less than the next cheapest seller. Something sounds a bit suspicious there surely?? All their gear looks suspiciously cheap actually. Just did a quick search on the web and they deal in grey imports it looks like. The only thin...
