Re: Canon Christmas present?

The cheap lens is exactly that. Its a smokescreen for the Canon 180 macro and the Canon 100-400 IS so that I can take pictures at Christmas of mother-in-law, the dog and SWMBO who theoretically is paying for the camera. You don't think that I would flash phallic lenses in public - there is probably ...

Re: Canon Christmas present?

I've gone for the Canon 18-55 because I ordered the 180mm macro with the camera and as soon as I have recovered from this December spending fest I shall get the suggested Canon 100-400 IS. I've ordered through the grey market (the 18-55 was quoted at £85) and if it works out I'll post the details. I...

Re: Canon Christmas present?

Can anyone suggest a good, cheap all round lens for the about to be delivered Canon so that I can pretend to be interested in taking photos of other things apart from butterflies?

Re: Canon Christmas present?

I won't get a new lens until after Christmas. I hope that the NHS give you the same choice of lenses as we can get for cameras. A nice macro in one eye and a wide angle in the other? I have to use a camera for most of my butterfly recognition. It is either because my eye-sight isn't what it was or ...

Re: Canon Christmas present?

I am coming to realise that I may not have got the best end of this deal - I should have bought the camera and asked SWMBO for the lenses. Still one must be grateful for small mercies even if its a lens-less camera, which will need another memory card, a spare battery and I wonder what else I can hi...

Canon Christmas present?

Much to my surprise SWMBO has agreed to give me something like a Canon EOS 7D DSLR for Christmas. :D The question is - is this the best for butterfly purposes ? (I am presently using a Canon Power Shot with a 20x zoom) which leads me to the main part of these questions. What lenses? Macro, and what ...

Re: Forest sell-off

Having just got back from the Surrey BC AGM I find this reply from my MP. I don't think that it adds anything to our knowledge but at least one minister knows that there is concern out there in them woods. Thank you for contacting me about forests. I appreciate your concern on this issue, particular...

Re: Forest sell-off

I have had my arguments with the Forestry Commission in the past and whilst they still remain a personal hate object I was inspired enough to dash off a letter to my MP . The Rt. Hon. J.R.S. Hunt M.P. The House of Commons London SW1A 0AA 25 October 2010 Dear Mr. Hunt, I recently read a newspaper rep...

I also saw a small copper sunning itself in a rabbit scratching in the middle of a field in SW Surrey. Its colour was so bright it must be a recent emergence.

Re: Grey moth ID please

Thank you for pointing me to the genus. According to Collins: The larger moths of Surrey, the commonest in this area would be Epirrita dilutata but both E. christyi and E. autumnata have been recorded within a mile or so.

Grey moth ID please

I was thinking of investing in a moth trap but having spent the last hour or two failing to identify this chap who popped in and stayed last night, what will I do with twenty or more? They will be dead by the time I find their photofits in the books. And this one must qualify as being almost the mos...

In 1966 I can remember our battalion Intelligence Officer, who was and I believe still is a butterfly fanatic, taking his whole section, all four of us, to act as an armed escort because he wanted to capture a Rajah Brooke. This was during the confrontation in Borneo. We spent a day leaping around a...

Violets for fritillaries

This winter I will have access to two new clearings in a wood which has violets and Silver Washed F around its borders. The wood is only a couple of miles west of Chiddingfold/Dunsfold forest. Which violets would do best in fairly heavy shade, I am thinking of dog violets ( Viola riviniana ) which I...

Re: Compact Camera users - Recommendations...

I do occasionally look at some of the images on here and think.... Hmmmmm, perhaps I should get a DSLR!!! You have hit the nail on the head. If it weren't for the professional pictures here I would be quite happy with my Powershot, and I would be tempted by the forthcoming 30x zoom model, bu...

Re: AES Exhibition & Trade Fair

It was my first experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially meeting Pete and Gruditch and upstairs on the Surrey Butterfly Conservation stand where I spoke to the chap who actually uses my sightings report! I was a bit disconcerted by the amount of dead and half-dead stock until I realised th...
