ID help muchly appreciated

Whilst out for a walk this afternoon my very observant daughter spotted this strange chap. Any ideas? http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x357/marbledwhite/P10105351.jpg http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x357/marbledwhite/P10105391.jpg Also is this known as a harlequin ladybird or an eyed ladybird...

Re: caterpillar web id please

Thank you very much. I've just had a browse and read on the web about them. Apparently it is now restricted to a few scattered colonies in England and Ireland, and a few localities in Wales. have to confess I'm not really a moth person, infact I'm still fighting a bit of a childhood phobia  bu...

Re: May 2011

Myself, my husband and 8 year old daughter went for a long walk to Cary marsh today. Thought it would give me a good opportunity to get use to my camera. The footpath was covered in buttercups, red clover and common vetch. Lots of common blues about, a few brown argus, orange tips, speckled woods, l...

Re: May 2011

My camera was delivered this morning so I thought I'd take it out this afternoon for a practise. It was very cloudy so nothing about. The sun came out when I got back to my garden and I saw something orange shoot past me and settle on the catmint. It was my first large skipper of the year. I then sp...

Re: Extremely early Purple Hairstreak?

It could be because the oaks were out very early this year, well they were here anyway. They beat the ash this year and as the saying goes-

Ash before oak, we are in for a soak,
Oak before ash, we are in for a splash.

Dry summer ahead maybe?

Re: Advice needed on compact camera.

My FZ38 arrived at 8.30am and I'm chuffed to bits :D So far I've worked out how to turn it on and how to zoom  Think I might have to sit down after work and read the instructions. You wouldn't believe I have a GCSE in photography, although things have changed since the slrs we used over 20 year...

Re: Advice needed on compact camera.

Thank you very much for your replies. I did mean the FZ38 not 35, I think browsing the internet confused me! I have decided to still go for the 38, it seems that the general view is that whilst good the FZ45 and 100 are not as good as the FZ38. So I'm watching about 10 different ones on ebay. Hopefu...

Advice needed on compact camera.

With my birthday money this year I decided to buy myself a decent camera. Funds are quite limited so a dslr is out of the question, think that will happen once the children have grown up and left home! After checking this forum and searching the internet I decided that I wanted a panasonic FZ35. I f...

Re: April 2011

Had a superb day here in sunny Somerset. I went out for a walk before and after work to make the most of the beautiful weather, although the dogs thought it was for their benefit! I had several firsts. i was chuffed to see my first male orange tip of the year and ended up seeing 10-15 and also a fem...

Re: March 2011

Rebecca I hope your camera gets better - or your bank balance does so you can replace it! We are about to hit (IMHO) the best time of the year for butterflies - DoB, Marsh Frits, PBs, Green Hairstreak, Orange tip, Glanvilles, Dingy and grizzleds and all those other archetypal butterflies of Spring ...

Re: July Sightings

I'm not sure if its nation wide but I cannot believe the numbers of butterflies this year, its fantastic. :) Just out walking the dogs across the fields and into the wood on the farm where I live, I have seen several small tortoiseshell, 1 painted lady, 3 common blues, a couple of red admirals, a br...

Re: novice needs help identifying 2 butterflies

Thank you very much Gruditch. That would make a lot of sense as I have seen alot of orange tips in the woods this year, just confused me with the lack of orange tip! I have seen quite alot of blues this year which is very unusual as I didn't see any around here last year.
Thank you again.

novice needs help identifying 2 butterflies

Hello I'm new to the forum but have been looking at the site for a while. Although I have been interested in nature for years, I have mainly concentrated on birds and wild flowers but have recently become more interested in butterflies. Normally I can identify the few I see in the garden or out in t...
