Re: April 2015

Went out on a transect walk yesterday on New hill and Tannager on the East Polden ridge and recorded 32 butterflies, 2 small torts, 14 Brimstones and 16 peacocks. The carpets of primroses were very popular. I was hoping to see my first Speckled wood or Orange tip of the year but will have to wait a ...

Re: Five years on...........

Thank you for the kind comments. I was going to pop back here yesterday but I did my first transect of the year and its no normal transect. Its very long, ridiculously steep for the majority of it, I'm full of cold and so managed to wear myself out! I hope you realise Pete just how invaluable and in...

Five years on...........

Hello all, its been a while since I posted here and I thought I would update you all on where life has taken me since I first posted on this forum 5 years ago. In 2010 I had taken 2 photos on my phone of 2 butterflies and just couldn't ID them so I discovered this site, joined and asked for help. No...

Re: Small Copper?

Two more butterflies that seem to be very thin on the ground are Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell. I've yet to see a new generation Peacock this year and as for Small Tortoiseshell, I've only seen one all year, in April in Sheffield. Still waiting for a local one! Compare that to their relatives Red...

No butterfly but a variety of insects.

This afternoon I was going through my photos stored on my pc when I discovered 2 files of photos that I didn't realise I had (badly organised). These photos were taken last summer. I came across a dragonfly, a spider and 2 moths that I am unable to identify with my British nature book and wondered i...

Just 6 months later than everyone else but I have 2 favourite Brown Argus pics from last year. Taken 31.05.11 in the field in front of my house. http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x357/marbledwhite/Brown%20argus/P10105412-1.jpg Taken 02.06.11 Perrymead meadows, Foddington. http://i1177.photobucket....

Re: Rebecca

Thank you for your comments. I'm in east Somerset and I'm very lucky to be near some very good sites. I never knew about the different butterflies I could see even in my locality. I've visited the wonderful Babcary meadows and Perrymead meadow which is only a few miles away and last year I discovere...

I've thought for a while that I ought to keep a diary and having read some others I have finally decided to start one. I also thought if anyone is interested that it might be good to read things from a newbies perspective. A bit of history first. It all started 2 years ago when I decided that I real...

Re: April 2012

Hi Rebecca, For Green Hairstreaks in Somerset, I would try the Blackdowns - Buckland Wood or Thurlbear Quarrylands (if there is still public access at the latter site). They seem to be widely distributed on Exmoor as well, though I don't know of any specific sites (and they surely will not have eme...

Re: April 2012

Thank you for your replies, very helpful. I've been checking my 50 Butterfly walks in Somerset & Bristol book and there are a few sites in there but I always like a recommendation from anyone who knows the sites.

Got a few days out planned, just got to wait for the weather to sort itself out!

Re: April 2012

Wet and windy here like most of the country today. No butterflying but good for plant life. Now up to 9 butterfly types seen after seeing my first GVW of the year last week. Finally got pictures of a male orange tip. I got my camera in May last year and so missed out on Male orange tip pics. This ye...

Still not a whiff of a Red Admiral or Small Tortoiseshell yet :(
Seen plenty of small torties, got some pics today but no red admirals as of yet. I wonder if its because they went to bed abit later than normal? I saw one flying in early December before they all finally hibernated.

Re: March 2012

Very quiet this morning when I went out, 2 speckled woods and a small tortoiseshell. It hadn't really warmed up at that point though. This afternoon was quite different. I went out for a bike ride and saw my first small whites and my first orange-tip of the year. Unfortunately my camera was at home....

Re: March 2012

Saw my first butterflies of the year on Monday 19th, 3 male brimstones. Since then I have seen small tortoiseshells, peacocks, a speckled wood and some commas. http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x357/marbledwhite/Brimstones/P10208531-1.jpg http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x357/marbledwhite/Comma...

Re: August 2011

This weekend has been pretty much a washout so I wasn't expecting to see much. I was in a foul mood earlier because of printer problems and the football, so my husband suggested going out for a stroll with the dogs as it had brightened up. As usual I took my camera just incase I did see something in...

Skippers

Hello all. As I finished work for the summer last Thursday (yes!!) I have had more time to go out and about. On Monday I decided to take the dogs and my camera for a stroll in the woods next to the farm to look for newly emerged peacocks. On the way i stopped by some oak trees and discovered we have...
