Perhaps I aim too high. This taken today S Cambs. It's about 2/3 crop and then resized. This is pretty much as good as I can get with the S3

The RAW hack has been deleted with the comments: "user is banned from forums"

So I guess it was an idea that was just TOO good.

Many thanks, That's all pretty much what I do although haven't looked at the RAW hack - will do that. The minimum distance except at wide angle is 90 cms - that is a real pain and something I hadn't realised when I purchased. So I quickly saw the need for a supplementary lens. I don't use the same l...

The rise & rise of the Brown Argus

Every piece of reasonably large grassland habitat seems to have Brown Argus this year in extrememly good numbers. Totternhoe, Ivinghoe, Devils Dyke, Burwell, etc. Today not 400 metres from home I found 6 or 7 in a locality where I hadn't seen them during the previous 15 years I have lived here (Sout...

Canon S3

I see that "eccles" uses a Canon S3 and his results are far better than mine using the same camera. I got my S3 a few months ago and although it has some very good features - eg the image stabilization and zoom range - I struggle with the focus. He doesn't seem to have that problem. I have...

Wood Whites Wicken Wood Northants/Bucks

Excellent numbers Saturday 2 June Wicken Wood Northants/Bucks, with sightings at frequency of about one per two minutes or better. Sometimes as many as three butterflies together. But they were almost impossible to photograph in the hot sunshine. They never stopped (timed one male for over 5 minutes...

Moth larva 24 Feb

On lavender in garden. Not totally dormant - it was making small movements. Length fully stretched circa 3.5 cms. Colour reasonably accurate in photo.

Bernwood Forest Oxon/Bucks border

I remember an afternoon circa 1963 or 64 when I found dozens of Silver Washed Fritillaries in the Oakley Wood part of the complex. I never found a single individual on return visits. However in the early 1970s there was a thriving colony of Pearl Bordered Frits and a small, but persistent colony of ...

At risk of going over old ground, I could make 11th, 18th or 25th so would prefer the day when most people can attend. I believe both Roger from Devon and Colin can make 11th so that would make three of us. But it would certainly be better if we could drum up others. I have an idea. We could always ...

Winter and snowdrops

At present, there are better showings of snowdrops than I can recall. This might suggest that the weather this winter has been ideal. It could also mean that it has been good too for hibernating butterflies (and of course, ova, larvae and pupae if that’s how they hibernate) and they have not, as is ...
