Old records of this species include specimens from East Kent (1851, 1856 and many from 1872 to 1874) including specimens taken between Wye and Ashford, as well as Deal in August 1892. There are also records of individual specimens from Lyndhurst in South Hampshire in 1868, Monk's Park Wood in Suffolk around 1879, West Lancashire in 1871, and Chichester in West Sussex in 1895. Sightings of this species are believed to be the result of captive breeding, given that the species was readily available through dealers.

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1758) as shown here (type locality: Europe).
