This species was mentioned in Westwood (1841) based on a specimen taken in Yorkshire, in the collection of a Mr. Meynell. It later turned out that the specimen was purchased from a dealer in London.
This species was first defined in Esper (1779) as shown here and as shown in this plate (type locality: Erlangen, Germany).
