A single specimen, found in a collection, has a label dated 11th August 1938 and that indicates it was reared from a larva that was found near "Newington", although there are several towns with this name in Britain. It is believed that the larva was either accidentally imported, or that the specimen was muddled in the collection.

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1764) as shown here (type locality: Germany).
